One Hundred and Fifty-Five Sonnets - 3. sophistry

.

Sonnet No. 5

Boy, lie with me, your head on my heart,

So you hear the stillness you engender –

You've said you're no poet when we're apart,

Yet, listen to the strains you render.

Right side/Left side, there's harmony in bed,

With the two of us making up the whole,

For we lie metaphor to all that's said,

About two bodies with one conjoined soul.

So love me as the phoenix was consumed,

To rise again, not in cold sophistry,

But fired by Love's flame, and never doomed,

For you are Poet, to all my Poetry.

You the left wing, and I the right, will rise

To shine in this, in many future eyes.

Sonnet No. 6

The ancient legend you asked me to tell,

Of how Apollo lost his precious boy –

How a jealous West Wind Hyacinth fell,

And sent a god to his knees from lost joy.

But why must so many of 'our' stories

Come to tragic or unhappy ending? –

Because 'their' wicked mind often glories

To break the unions they find offending.

Yet, sometimes in the past we've won,

And still to this day on Mount Olympus,

A king and his boy love as they begun,

With Ganymede pressing his cup to the lips of Zeus.

For if we are brave enough for our fate,

Only happy endings for us await.

I'm a sucker for Greek mythology, so the second one was just right for me!
I know our little poetry group isn't the intended receiver of the first one, but I sort of think it can be read as a poem about us poetry people on GA and how we all, with you by our side, can rise to new heights through the joint love of poetry and words. Exploring that world and sharing our work for all to see. LOL Or I'm just self-centered...

AC number 5 is beautiful. I hope the person to whom you were writing, read these. For me this line was perfect and telling: For you are Poet, to all my Poetry. He was both your love and inspiration.
Number 6 says much about our community, how we were and still are hated by many just because of who we love. But as you say, sometimes we win. Sometimes.
Loved these AC.. cant wait for more!

Thank you, Puppilull, for a great review! Well, I like that you felt a personal connection to the poem – that's the best feedback I can hope for.

I do like the Ganymede story, maybe because it is one of the few Greek myths with a happily-ever-after. Thanks again.

I agree with Puppi on both counts here. I am moved by each in turn, remembering both love and Myth. Sonnet building is no joke, and must be approached with care and thought. You have crafted two very fine pieces here.

Thanks for the review and support, Parker. I appreciate your feedback, and hope will enjoy the rest as well. :)

Thank you, Tim, for a wonderful review! Tony saw these, so yes he read them.

I love your take on No. 6, and yes, if we accept our fate, then we can always win through love. Thanks again!

No. 5 sonnet was so beautiful! I don't know if you have written it for someone or not...(if it is that fellow must be very pleased after reading it) For me the last 8 lines were gem. To say that both of your souls are one, n just like the Phoenix are reborn after burning down, u both too rise again from flames of your love...N I loved ur saying he is the poet of ur poetry n the comparison of him being the left wing n u right...it felt like I could go onnn!!! I m in a bit of awe!!

N in no.6..I think it was told of greek mythology...again wonderfully written!!

Thanks, Aviana. As you can tell by now, all of these Sonnets were written for Tony. I've always have a soft spot in my heart for No. 5...so it's wonderful to hear others' impression on it.

I also like No. 6, so your feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks again for all your reviews :)

No. 5 is wonderful. In my mind it starts pianissimo adagio, to become allegro con fuoco.

I love the pictures of the omni soul in two bodies. But most of all I love this line: "For you are Poet, to all my Poetry."

This line tells such a truth. Without our ability to feel, we would be nothing, we couldn't write a single line. So the people evoking the strongest emotions in us, are the poets, which create the poetry in our connected souls and bring us to write.

What kind of blessing, to have the ability to write down, what lives inside of us.

Thanks again, Lyssa. Your comments about tempo, and how it changes over the course of the poem, is interesting to me. Ever since I started to take writing poetry seriously...say from age 19 onwards....I always took inspiration from musical structure, particularly the use of refrain and the sonata form.

As for the "Poet to all my Poetry," you seem to understand my intent perfectly

Thanks for making me grin ear to ear today. Muah
