One Hundred and Fifty-Five Sonnets - 51. Zhivago

Sonnet No. 101


Sometimes the draw of this paper is all

I have to pull me out of bed, and think

My lonely snow-white sheets will take the scrawl

Of my restless hope spilling out into ink.

I imagine Zhivago, and the ice

He had to chop through to get to his desk,

But – the unfrozen chamber must entice –

For at its center, lays love picturesque.

Alone with my sheets, I draw you out too;

I write your name at the top of my heart,

And allow icy blood the ink to bestrew,

For every word is drawn before I start.

Alone within my center chamber room,

Love predestines with Its fiery plume.

 

 

Sonnet No. 102


Two young men locked in a tender embrace

Were buried together in ancient times –

One supports on his chest his beloved's face,

And archeologists lauded their finds.

'Romantic!' the scientists said freely:

An example of marital devotion

That even death could not cheat completely,

And which can yet stir human emotion.

But, this tale has not a happy ending,

For they thought man and woman were so interred,

And to the love of men they went denying –

The truth before their eyes with fresh dirt inured.

To deny the basic truth of Love cheats,

And all of human intellect defeats.

How easy it is to ignore evidence that flies in the face of cherished falsehoods. Number 102 just made me shake my head. I really liked Number 101; the use of the word sheet inspired so many diverse images. Snowy sheets of paper, snowy bedsheets on which we scrawl our own indelible signatures, and sheets of frozen snow which form the winters of our lives - all were brought to my mind at once. Thank you for sharing these with us.

the first is wonderful ... but the second is beautiful to us who don't fear the truth.  it is also frustrating that such learned people would lie in the face of the truth. i want to shake them and ask 'what are you so damned afraid of?'

Parker’s comments on the word sheet, made me read the first over again.. :) 

 

As for 102.. It’s a shame that they wouldn’t be true to their findings. It still is romantic and beautiful.

Thank you for reading and commenting, Parker. I really appreciate it. I like your take on both poems, but on the numerous ancient same-sex couples uncovered, another one was rather recently muddied. By which I mean, when found in the 70s it was touted as the most romantic burial ever found, but DNA testing done in 2017 proving them to be a male couple now makes the 'authorities' toss out humiliating words like bromance to quote-un-quote explain the sight. I'm sick to death of this.

Since I left a link with Parker's comments, I'll leave a second one with you (wish to god I did not have so many to cite, but homophobia knows no bounds...). This the case of two elite warriors being buried together with all their treasures for continuing their marriage in the afterlife. When it was assumed one of the was a woman, well, all was peachy and preached as sign and symbol of ancient love all the way. But now that both are proven male, they have the audacity to retract the romantic story they've peddled on the couple. Makes me sick. Not love, love, love (as with an assumed opposite-sex shared grave), but deny, deny, deny when it's a same-sex afterlife on display. *steams a bit* 😤

your SONNETS are among my favorite things and Dr. Zhivago is one of my favorite movies, so to see them together was wonderful! 

 

about 101, that it's the paper, and writing on it, is what pulls the poet from his bed, well i understand that.  the comparison to the ice that Zhivago digs through is beautiful!

 

number 102, well it's just sad

The DVD of Doctor Zhivago is in this house too ;) And ever since I first saw it, that scene where he chops through the ice of his family's country house in winter to find his library ice-free, and then sits there to write his "Laura" poem...oh....I have just loved it. Suits my idea of romance to a tee.

Thank you, Def. I know I shared that Siberian link with you earlier this week, but I swear I didn't know this Sonnet on the subject was coming up to be posted so soon. Well, maybe I knew without having to think about it; who knows.
