One Hundred and Fifty-Five Sonnets - 31. loadstone

.

Sonnet No. 61

However else I feel, you are my muse,

Waking me from a cold sleep by will

To draw some lines I know you won't refuse

If I'm able to show you a bit of skill.

For in my ships I seem to find no rest –

When asleep, my confidence is shaken,

Constantly roiling me with the best;

When awake, your love of me's not mistaken.

So, inspiration and challenge you stay,

My north-pulling magnetic loadstone,

Guiding my barque back to a Viking fray,

Where old shortcomings must beg for fresh atone.

A fevered brain gets no comfort in sleep,

When awake and active it dreams as deep.

Sonnet No. 62

My sadness has the substance of music –

A hundred variations on a theme,

Whose notes are mad, and whose tones are mystic

To start again just as the end would seem.

But your love for me's a perfect melody,

Sweet, and clear, and high, like a morning bird.

It comes to seek me out in my malady,

To awaken me with a trebling third.

For to rouse me in the freshness of your thought

Is to shake off dark night's gloomy rerun;

To start new with you and the time we've bought

Is magic tempo bright enough to stun.

To your love's refrain, I am never deaf,

But am soothed, as you climb your treble clef.

I love the nautical feel, the seaman like allusions and ocean imagery in Sonnet 61. You talk about compass and lodestone, and remind me of navigating across the trackless open sea. Love can feel like this sometimes, can't it? Sonnet 62's first line caught hold of me, for the substance of music is quite a phrase. I love the connections you make to different music makers; birds, voices, instruments. You provoke me with wonderful images in both of these; you are a master of this. Many thanks!

Both poems are very special. The first one draws images of sailing over blue water like Parker says. I like the thought of getting guided by the muse and love. (And as I only sail with B as a skipper, because he is the only one I would trust sailing blue water holding everyone safe, I feel a sort of connection to this thought.)

The second one ... as a person, who is constantly singing inside her head, I just love it!!!

Muses who rouse you with their will, lodestones with magnetic pull: lots of draw in the first poem. You are drawn, and are navigating, but the seas of love i think.

The second is music, of life, of love, music that you find in everything, in the world.

Two more wonderful sonnets, AC!

*shrug* I enjoy them, even if I don't always have worthwhile words for a comment.

Well I still appreciate you reading them and letting me know :) It does help, even if it's only a small acknowledgement

Thank you, Parker. I tried to marry a certain seasick feeling I get sometimes while being in love. It seems you felt that in No. 61, so I'm grateful. As for No. 62, I tend to agree that it's opening line is one of my more memorable ones. Thanks again for your support and an awesome review.

Thanks, Lyssa. I always love hearing personal connections to my poems (and work). Your thoughts make me want to out with B skippering too... Kiss, and a million more thanks to you.

Thank you, Tim. You always leave me great reviews, and I appreciate them. I think with these two poems, we are speaking about leading and being led - one on sea, one in bed.... Thanks again :)

Sometimes knowing others read them is enough...and please know I'm being very sincere. Thank you
