Book Review: The Laying on of Hands by Alan Bennett

It is the memorial service of Clive Dunlop, masseur to the great and good. His “magic touch” was in great demand, plus the extras he sometimes provided. But Clive has died, aged only 34, from a sudden illness, and many of the mourners there are worried about what exactly he died from. Using the memorial service as a framing device, Alan Bennett has created a story of regret and repressed emotions. At the heart of it is Father Geoffrey Jolliffe who is both leading the memorial service and al

Why is it so hard to find love?

One of the sad truths about being gay and single, it's hard to have a relationship with a decent guy. Sex is a few clicks away, but someone who wants to talk, make dinner together, or walk around the streets is harder to come by. Then, when you do find those kinds of guys, there's a fatal flaw with them: they enjoy sneaking kisses in back alleys (Uh, it's dark and the dumpster reeks), they blow out your tastebuds with some kind of pepper since you told them you enjoy spice (I like spicy, but God

Book Review: 84 Charing Cross Road & The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street by Helene Hanff

In 1949, the New York based writer Helene Hanff replied to an advert in The Saturday Review of Literature by the London bookshop Marks & Co. Her letter had the list of books that she was looking to buy. Frank Doel, an employee of the bookshop, replied to her and from those first letters grew a nearly twenty-year friendship, though the two of them never met. 84 Charing Cross Road, the first book in this double book volume, is Hanff’s letters to and from Marks & Co. She mainly corresp

July CSR Discussion Day: Him in the Dust by James Matthews

Welcome to the last Monday of the month. I hope it's gone well for you, and if not, you're here not to enjoy this interview 😉 with @James Matthews and share your thoughts on his story, Him in the Dust. Don't be shy now!!  Are you a person who makes their bed in the morning, or do you not see much point? I really had to think about this question before giving an honest answer. I'd say my bed is unmade most of the time. I do like to get into a made bed as I'm sure we all do so on a weeke

Weekly Wrap Up (Jul. 17 - Jul. 23)

Whew, getting this in by the hair of my chinny chin chin   Even though I'm fair haired (in the summer my hair turns strawberry blond), I know I burn, and I do everything possible besides wearing a snowsuit, touque, and ski goggles in 30 C weather, but I still am burnt to hell tonight  I mean, about a hour before I went out I took a shower and rubbed in a generous supply of SPF 30 Sport and then waited 10 mins and sprayed on SPF 50 Sport. Went down to my vehicle 5-10 mins later and put on so

All I ever wanted....July days

Vacation!! Nothing stimulates the recreative juices like a getaway.  Here we are in the middle of July with a lake beckoning, the hammock swaying gently between two trees, and a grill smoking away with barbequed delights searing and sizzling.  A cold, condensed mist trickles down the side of a glass of lemonade, or an adult beverage, and a dog-eared open book splays on your lap as the birds chirp and the squirrels wrestle.  Maybe it’s time to relax and try a new prompt!  Pull out the c

Poetry Anthologies

While the anthology is now a combination of poetry and stories, in the past, site poets participated in poetry-exclusive anthologies.  I thought I'd feature a couple of those and hopefully get some of our poets inspired to contribute to the anthology.  I know of at least a couple of poetry submissions for this year, so let's have a solid showing to honor GA's anniversary!    https://gayauthors.org/stories/browse/category/37-2011-poetry-anthology-into-the-unknown/ https://gayauthor
