I read an interesting quip in "Men's Health" some time back, in that bartender guy's column. A guy had cheated on his girlfriend and he wanted to know if he should confess. The bartender guy made a good point. He said "no", the guy shouldn't. He pointed out that all confessing would do is salve the boyfriend's guilt at the expense of hurting the innocent victim (the girlfriend). He pointed out that the penalty for such an offense is to keep it to yourself and deal with the guilt as a penance, and of course, don't do it again.
