I really doubt that Nicky knows that Owen went ino the hospital and the cause for it. As Ann, Sharon, Kitty and Elizabeth wisely noted, Owen's parents never told Owen why his brothers left so it is not likely that they "advertised" that Owen's father beat Owen so badly that Owen was hospitalized just for the mere fact that he is Gay. As a general note and aside, I have noticed that Kitty, Sharon, Ann and Elizabeth are always the voice of reason and are consistent and generally always correct in their observations. I can always count on their good sense and take great comfort in that. Now, if we can get the dummies that run this country to take their good common sense approach and good counsel, the world would be a better place. (Um, Sharon, you say you are a"dark sider"....nah....you are our Sharon and we love you for being you:) but we shall soon see since Dom in his blog said he is working on Ch 29 despite a bad cold and it appears he is debating to turn it into 2 chapters or keep it one long chapter. carmichael Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 I am very anxious for the next chapter. Dom is and probably always will be my favorite author, and his stories really are unrivaled. However, does anyone know of any other good authors on the Web that have stories that are very similar to Dom's? OR even writer's who write about the same sort of things, the same way? (Job well done if any of that made sense to you) Who are all of your other-than-Dom Favorites? -Alan
bristol-nick Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 It is clear that all of us appreciate the subtle weaving of the plot that Dom does so well. His characters are vivid, likeable, and in the cases when they need to be unlikeable. All of his stories are easy to enjoy and The Log Way as his first is probably one of his best, but one of the things that I jsut want to point out now, which I'm sure that everyone has noticed and probably stated before, but Dom's language in his stories is sublime. His choice of words to describe the moment are always perfect, apt and add to the storyline immensely. We are absolutely honoured to be provided with such quality literature and on such a frequent basis. It would be interesting to see Dom turn his hand to more classical literature, although personally I enjoy his stories immensely, so I wouldn't want to stop the flow. One other thing that I've observed, and everyone will probably disagree with me, but being English (grossly unfashionable these days), there seems to be a really European sense to a lot of Dom's stories. The ideas in the stories all have a sense of European openess and tolerance, something which I personally don't naturally associate with America, but I think I'm probably incorrect in that assumption and just pandering to stereotypes, so for the very reason that Dom shows such worldly flair and literary class in his writing I am forever grateful. Nick, <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Nick, IMHO you are correct...sad but true that in America in many parts of it there isn't an opennessor acceptance regarding those of us who are Gay....but I am still hoping one day that the stories and lives Dom and Matt and Meg and Appollo so beautifully write are where we can sing and live openly without the fear of Gay bashing, losing our jobs, face discrimination for being Gay or being bashed, physically and otherwise, due to our sexual orientation. Beyond that I agree with you on all counts. As I have said in other posts, I believe that Dom is an excellent student of Shakespeare in that he does the "laws of unintended consquences" combined with the humor of characters who have "communication dysfunction" combined with excellent classical characters. It has led me to start to read some of the English classics again...since I see much of his characters in them....so I am going to start with Jane Austen and work my way from there...see how Dom inspires in ways he never knew:) and for fun throwing in Oscar Wilde....fun summer reading to go in between waiting for Dom's, Meg's, Matt's and Apollo's Magical stories to appear:) Michael 1
Mark Arbour Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 Nick, I can see where you'd get that impression of Americans, especially with our current government and it's enslavement by the religous right wing. You should know, though, that this country has many tolerant and enlightened people. Certain parts of the country seem to be more inclined to accept others as they are. Here's how I see it: Start with the two coasts. On the West Coast, From California to Washington, you're more likely to find people who are more enlightened. The same can be said for the East Coast, or at least for the East Coast north of Virginia. If you find yourself in the Midwest or South, your best bet is to find an urban area. People in the cities seem to be less overwhelmed by America's hyper-religious culture. And if you really want a small town environment, try a college town. They bring in educated people who create a thoughtful atmosphere. They say education is the cure for ignorance. America is a tapestry of individuals. If you look hard enough, you can find a place that you like, and that likes you. 1
