I watched a great movie a week or so ago on Netflix. I was really impressed with the quality of the acting and the supporting cast. Maybe not the most original theme, but hey, there are thousands of stories here along the same theme. It is Irish, so involves rugby.

My American counterpart for screening films says it is on American Netflix and liked it but not to the extent that I did :P

I just saw this and really enjoyed it as well.  Nothing truly goundbreaking, but I liked the fact that the focus was on friendship between the guys instead of a romantic relationship.  I also appreciated the fact that the sexuality of one the leads was left ambiguous at the end as well.  Definitely worth watching.

And Fourth Man Out is also a good one.  It suffers from a lot of the same problems as most indies---being a bit uneven, but the lead actors are good.  And it avoids the focus on the usual urban, "fabulous" gay guy.  He's very small town, blue collar.  And his coming out is not easy, but it's not a super agnsty one.  It felt pretty realistic.  I think it's still on Netflix.

They've already been mentioned but I recently watched Being 17 and The Way He Looks and both were INCREDIBLE and focused a lot more on romantic tension build up over just a relationship. It was a nice change to some American Films. Latter Days is always a fav being ex-mormon.

The first gay film I ever watched was Beautiful Thing when I was 15. I watched it on youtube and used to watch it in little 10-15 minute bursts when I first got home from school before my mum would get home. Our one computer was in the kitchen and she would have killed me if she saw me watching a gay film. Honestly, though, it was a life changing movie and the first time I realized that being gay meant I could actually be in love and have a relationship, rather than just being about sex. Kind of a life changing film that allowed me to accept my sexuality when I had been depressed and hating myself for years.

Krista said the same thing about it not being focused on a sexual relationship, only friendship.

We both really enjoyed the Headmaster, his way of handling things surely meant he knew much more than he let on :)

The acting was really good. The one Teacher, both leads, and the headmaster were really well portrayed and done. It is definitely worth the watch. Gay films are either so unsteady acting wise, fall into so many cliche' and stereotypes, move either too fast or way too slow, or end in a death/tragedy.

It was nice watching a film where none of that happened, you're left with something good.

I thought the coach was a great performance too... especially in that scene with the headmaster :)

Yes, I liked all the characters with substantial screen time. :D It was a very low-key well done film that I think I am appreciating more after a bit of time after watching it. Being 17 is another one, although I thought it moved a bit slow. Those being the two more recent films that I watched. I'd definitely recommend both though.

If you haven't seen it already, I recommend C. R.A.Z Y. ... superb acting and powerful story line :)

I watched C.R.A.Z.Y for the first time this year as well. It was a bit slow moving, but the characters were interesting enough to keep me watching. :D

I've watched a bunch of movies lately. I really enjoyed Being Seventeen. The volatility between the leads was brilliantly performed. I felt it in every scene.

Beautiful Something was a damn good experience for the hope it delivers amongst a seedy backdrop.

Tomcat was interesting... sad at times, but the perseverance shown was both surprising, and uplifting. Mourning a loss exposes our human frailty.

Fair Haven is a decent enough movie. Some excellent acting from the younger leads... mediocre performances from the 'names' though. Still, I enjoyed it, despite it being a simple and predictable story.

The setting was interesting too: the French Pyrenees.

Watched a movie called Retake last night. Extremely well acted. There was definite chemistry between the leads. I have a hard time with the cliched endings of some gay-themed movies, but there was a certain satisfaction to this one. I do recommend viewing this movie... it is slow at times, but there are some very evocative moments. I found the two side characters who appear briefly, rather refreshing. Cheers... Gary....

My beautiful laundrette - it has Daniel Day Lewis. Nuff said.

Querelle -  I think this was Tom of Finland's inspiration, or the other way around. Brad Davis was hot in this film.

Patrik 1.5 - I love this family comedy drama. It's a swedish film and stars Alexander Skarsgard's brother, Gustaf. And he's bro's really cute.

The way he looks - cute story about a blind gay teen. Foreign film.

Undertow - must watch it. Kinda sad.

Yossi and Jagger - Has the Kite Runner feel for me. It's a military movie but the storyline's very good. It has a sequel...but it's kinda meh.

Free Fall - another swedish film with hot gay cops and really hot gay cops. It's gay porn with a really good story with high production values.

Weekend - pretty much the story of my life. Need I say more.

Pink Flamingos - gave me nightmares but you can't stop watching it. Divine is brill in this.

Un Chant D'Amour - Gay silent film. Very sensual for a 1950's film. It's a short film but very...Boner worthy for the imaginative moviegoer.

Happy Together - this film made me think A LOT about relationships.

*I'm replying through my phone and necromancing this old post. So if I have typo's...I have big fingers. Will edit later.*

Yossi is the sequel to Yossi and Jagger. It takes place 10 years (and many pounds) later.  ;-)

Free Fall is German.  ;-)

I wasn’t as enamored of Querelle as you were, but Brad Davis (more famous for Midnight Express) was extremely hot. And you did mention most of my favorites too! But speaking of Tom of Finland, were you aware of the movie of that same name that came out in 2017? I recommended that movie in my thoughts on Frameline41 in The Pit.  ;-)

I just watched this a couple of nights ago, and really enjoyed it. The four leads do a great job, and the story is a positive one. I agree the situation was pretty realistic, and I would watch this one again. :)

I watched a movie last night called Romeos. It is about a F2M Transsexual who is part way through the process. I found it riveting, and while there is a lot of intense trading of looks, I really felt this man's situation. The opposite lead (Maximilian Befort) does a great job as a gay man fighting an attraction to him. Powerful and tidy film, and one I consider a must-see. It is a German film with some English sprinkled throughout.

I loved the 1994 British film Priest, which features Linus Roache as the titular character along with Tom Wilkinson and Robert Carlyle from The Full Monty!

One funny scene has young Father Pilkington (Roache) and the more cynical Father Thomas (Wilkinson) doing door-to-door outreach in a Council Estate (government housing project). Father Thomas is convinced the effort is pointless and Father Pilkington is feeling superior when, after having the door slammed in their faces several times, they are invited in. They are seated in the living room when one of the residents informs them, “We're Jehovah’s Witnesses and…”  ;-)

There are several different sexual secrets revealed, but Father Pilkington was arrested with Graham (Carlyle) for having sex in a parked car.

French musical, I really liked, although it doesn't start as a gay movie

Spoiler

Like several French movies, has a very open approach to sex, with a threesome relationship of the main actor with his wife and a female colleague.

After a tragedy, the end is less "straight" and also plays with the subject of age difference,

I've been crushing on Evan Todd since I watched him in this film. The whole geeky fit introvert he had going in the film was very swoon worthy. Plus he's a stage actor in real life who has a nice singing voice so *drools*.

So instead of talking about a movie you have seen, what about a movie that is coming out? Krista brought my attention to this upcoming movie. Looks like a major studio put some bucks into this one and releasing to the US market

So Krista mentioned it is based off a book. So a quick search directed to me to Simon vs.the Homo Sapiens Agenda. The book is excellent!!! So I've included a link here to order it on Amazon, but I think I need @Myr to edit my post to make it so if you order in the US, GA will get a small portion in the US.

This looks good!! I just saw Call Me By Your Name. It was an amazing movie, superbly acted, and charmingly pieced together. There is a scene with the dad that was truly amazing. :)

I’ve seen and enjoyed most of the movies on your Seen list. On your Yet To Watch list, I enjoyed AkronCenter of my World; and Patrik, Age 1.5. I haven’t seen Call Me by Your Name yet, but I have read the book. Since Lad: a Yorkshire Story is on your list (I’ve never heard of it myself), you might want to see God’s Own Country which is also set in ‘All Creatures-Land’ (Yorkshire).  ;-)
