Another name for it is Glucophage, which basically means sugar eater. As far as I know it doesn't actually lower the insulin level. Type 2 diabetes is caused by the body not responding to insulin as well as it should do, so I reckon it would not be a good idea to then start taking a medicine that actually lowers the insulin level even further... The main job of insulin is to regulate the level of glucose in the blood, causing it to be stored in the cells of the body if the level starts to rise. High levels in the blood, while not immediately dangerous, can lead to long term damage, such as kidney failure (due to the kidneys taking over the regulatory effect by excreting the excess sugar in the urine - hence the old name of "Sweet Pee" to describe the condition), cardiovascular problems and poor blood supply to the extremities (particularly the feet), raised blood pressure, problems with the eyes (could even cause blindness eventually), amongst other things. Metformin keep my blood sugar down at normal levels. It's working so well for me that my doctor tells me after my every 6 monthly blood tests that, if he didn't know I was Type 2 diabetic, the results would indicate I wasn't (if that makes any sense). Fortunately I have zero side effects from Metformin, and I understand that is the case for the vast majority of people who use it. Hi, Marty. 2 2

Heading out for the evening shortly - usual Thursday evening voluntary work. Spent a few hours in the early afternoon picking up a friend of mine who currently has no car, took him shopping, and (more importantly) for a flu jab that was scheduled for 3:00 pm. I did manage to find the time when I got back home to take @dughlas's advice and spread the runner bean vines on the lawn and let the lawnmower chop them up before adding them to the compost heap. 6 1

It's usually for type 2 diabetics but for me, who is overweight and has PCOS, it's to lower the insulin and blood sugar levels in hope to regulate my cycles. I hope you have better luck with it than I did. I had horrible side effects from it and had to stop taking it. Thankfully, I've been able to successfully manage my blood sugar through diet alone. 7

I had bloodwork done today in preparation for my physical next week, so fingers crossed I've been able to continue managing my diabetes through diet alone. 6 1
Site Administrator Popular Post Valkyrie Posted October 15, 2020 Site Administrator Popular Post Posted October 15, 2020 I've had a busy day. I got up early for routine bloodwork, then went grocery shopping. My mom came over after that and we worked in the basement and living room. We brought a lot of garbage up from the basement and some other things down there for storage. We also took a load of things for donation and did some organizing in the living room. Now I'm totally beat. @dughlas on my way to get my bloodwork done this morning, I saw a man walking a little Yorkie on my street. Made me think of you and Thistle 2 5

Popular Post dughlas Posted October 15, 2020 Popular Post Posted October 15, 2020 We made it safely to mum's, arrived before 11:00. We've unpacked the multitude of foodstuffs I've brought with me. The pup and I've had a bit of a doze though I'm more tired now than before the nap. It's warm, 75/24° and very humid. Very unlike the weather we've recently had back home. 1 7
