sneak peek New Year's Day

Riley tugged the ball cap a little lower as soon as he stepped through the door, trying to keep the upper portion of his face in shadows. He did not think anyone would recognize him but wanted to remain incognito as long as possible. He was ready. As ready as he was going to be. His resolution for the new year was to be honest, and this was the first step. Nerves knotted his stomach, but he drew a deep breath and approached the bar. Spying an open stool next to a swinging door, he made a beeline for it.

“Happy New Year, handsome. What can I get you?” The bartender was a bear of a man, wearing a black and white striped referee shirt with hairs curling over the neckline, and a whistle hanging from a black cord. He was attractive for being an older man.

“A Corona, please.” A smirk crossed Riley’s face when he automatically ordered his favored summer beer in the middle of winter. Back home in Macon the temperature was thirty degrees colder than in warm South Florida.

“Coming right up.” The bartender pointed at the door behind the bar next to Riley’s stool. “Kitchen’s open if you get hungry.” He nodded at the menu stuck between bottles of ketchup and mustard.

“Thanks. Maybe a little later.” He took a swig from the icy bottle and glanced at the mirrored wall behind the bar. Looking online to find a place to watch college bowl games a few days before, he settled on GYM Bar—a gay, sports, watering hole in Wilton Manors.

The story's moving ahead, although it keeps fighting me. I want a short story and the characters keep pushing for more. I... will... resist.

Since we already met Riley, one of the protagonists, here's a peek at the other one.

Phil Martinez entered the kitchen without making any noise; the woman at the sink rinsing dishes did not notice when he crept up behind her. “Happy New Year, Maria,” he said, as he wrapped his arms around her and kissed the side of her face.

“¡Ay, Dios mio! Me vas a dar un ataque al corazón, Felipe. ¿Y por que estás desnudo?”

“Yeah, bro… Why are you trying to give Abuela a heart attack and why are you naked?”

Phil twirled around to face the speaker. His younger brother, Matt, sat at the kitchen table with The Miami Herald’s sports page and a mug. “Morning, bro. You’re up early. And for the record, I ain’t naked.” Phil pointed at the Duke Blue Devils boxer shorts he wore.

“Those don’t count. I can see your junk moving around.” Matt glanced at their grandmother to check her reaction, but she was already filling up the little Italian percolator to brew another batch of espresso. “Can’t believe you’re almost flashing her.”

Pain in the butt when no matter what I'm doing I keep thinking of scenes and dialogue.

Readers I like, characters... well, sometimes they're intrusive to say the least. I was watching a basketball game last night and had to rewind at one point because I missed a great sequence. I spaced out while my mind crafted dialogue between the two football players in this story. I really need to get a life.
