Thwarted - 41. Chapter Forty-One

Mark couldn’t believe it. His sister had just outed him to their father. He jerked his gaze to his dad and wasn’t surprised to see him scowling, his face flushed and his jaw tight. Before he could say anything, Mark’s phone started ringing in his pocket.

Shit. He’d been so preoccupied he’d forgotten to call Trey and let him know they’d made it. He couldn’t answer, not now. Mark slipped his hand in his pocket and silenced his phone, sending the call to voicemail as he faced off against his dad. Seconds later, Gary’s phone started ringing, confirming it had probably been Trey calling. Gary’s hand disappeared from his shoulder and his phone fell silent. When Diane’s phone started ringing, Mark risked taking his eyes off his dad and looked down at his mother-in-law.

“It’s probably Trey. Please Diane, go outside and answer.” He hoped she could see the begging in his eyes. He didn’t want her to see what he was sure was coming. “He’s going to freak if he can’t get ahold of any of us.”

Diane looked at him briefly before nodding. She released her grip on his hand and pulled her phone out just as it stopped ringing.

“Go ahead and call him back, I’ll stay here with Mark.” Gary met his gaze and Mark nodded. Gary didn’t want Diane in the room any more than he did. He wished Gary would go too, but there probably wasn’t anything he could say, or do, that would convince the other man to leave. He watched Diane leave, the phone to her ear, and turned back to his dad.

“You’re a fucking fag? Being a military drop out wasn’t enough for you?” His dad started towards him.

It took everything in him to keep from flinching. His dad angry was never a good thing; he always ended up hurting afterwards. If not physically, mentally.

“Answer me!” His dad’s voice echoed in the room. “You a fucking fag? Shouldn’t be surprised.” His dad stopped in front of him and shoved at his chest.

Mark stumbled back.

“I didn’t think you could disgrace this family anymore than you already had.” His dad shook his head and shoved him again. “I’m just glad your sister waited to say anything. At least your poor mother never knew how disgusting you are.”

“Dad….”

“I’m not your dad.”

“You’re right, you’re not.” Gary stepped in front of him. “I am. You touch my son again and you’ll be dealing with me.”

Mark blinked back the tears that threatened to spill out.

“He always was a fucking pansy, I shouldn’t be surprised.” David Bailey chuckled. “He wasn’t strong enough to be a marine. The only armed forces that would take his pathetic ass was the army.”

Mark couldn’t stop the hurt. He’d known, long ago that there was no love lost between him and his father, but the pure venom spewing from his dad’s lips shocked even him. He didn’t know what to say, but before he could say anything, Gary reacted. Mark didn’t even have a chance to stop him as Gary’s fist connected with his dad’s jaw. His dad stumbled back as Gary turned to him.

“C’mon son, you don’t need to listen to this anymore.” Gary grabbed his shoulder and turned him, guiding him towards the door, just as Diane came back in.

“Trey asked for you to call him as soon as we leave here.” She glanced past him and then looked up into his face. “Are you okay, Mark?”

“He’ll be okay, Diane. We’re leaving though.” Gary kept Mark moving towards the door.

“But what about the funeral?” Diane looked perplexed but fell into step beside them.

“We’ll take Mark by the funeral home so that he can say good-bye to his mother properly.” Gary glanced over his shoulder. “I’m sure she would understand if Mark didn’t attend the funeral itself.”

“There’s no point in going to the funeral home.” Jackie’s voice sounded behind them.

Gary tried to keep them moving, but Mark stopped and turned. Jackie was watching them, her hand on her father’s arm. He agreed with Gary, his mom would have understood if he said his good-bye to her in private.

“Why’s that Jackie? I can see her and say good-bye just as well at the funeral home as I can at the funeral.” His gaze slipped to the man who used to be his father. “At least then none of you will have to be in the same room with me.”

“I asked you to drive down with us. Told you that you needed to be here, but you insisted that you needed to wait and see Trey off.” She took a step towards them, but stopped. “You made it clear that he was more important than your own family.”

“Obviously he cares about me more than my own damn family.” Mark glared at her. “That’s not going to stop me from saying a proper good-bye to mom.”

“No, I know.” Jackie grinned. “Next time, maybe you’ll do as I ask. As I said, going to the funeral home and having your own personal viewing won’t do you any good.”

“You can’t stop me.” Mark turned and started towards the door again. Hopefully his dad and sister wouldn’t call and tell the funeral home to refuse him access.

“Maybe.” Jackie didn’t sound too concerned. “If you really wanted to say good-bye to her, you should have driven down with us.”

She was taunting him, he knew it, but couldn’t ignore it. Especially since her voice was suddenly coming from right behind him. He stopped and turned, looking down into his sister’s eyes.

“You’ve made your feelings clear. That doesn’t have anything to do with whether or not I go to the funeral home so that I can see her and say good-bye.”

“You’re right”—Jackie shrugged—“unless I’m forgetting something. Oh, that’s right. You’d have gotten the chance to see her, if you’d gotten here before we had her cremated. You’re about six hours too late.”

I'd made a comment to Steve (aka Wildone) about the possibility of posting this chapter early if I reached 220 reviews on Thwarted. He decided to make it happen. So, throughout the story, you've seen many actions by Jackie. Does her actions over the last couple of chapters make you look at them closer? Maybe you're questioning some of what she's done throughout. I'd love to hear your thoughts, so leave a review. You can also post in the discussion thread if you'd like!

Lovely surprise to find another chapter :) But this was so hard to read, so much hatred from Mark´s father. Gary was brilliant, he behaved like a loving dad and was there to protect Mark. And Jackie...she was horrible, she sounded like she was actually enjoying telling Mark he was too late to see his mum and to say his goodbyes. Neither of them, father or Jackie, seem to be grieving at all. No tears, no hugs, just hatred towards Mark. Jackie never understood that Trey is Mark´s family now and why it was so important for Mark to spend the last moments with Trey. Gary and Diane are really needed now, Mark needs someone to comfort and love him, Trey´s away and his father doesn´t want to have him as a son, and it´ll take a long time before Mark and Jackie will be able to have a proper relationship again.

Very powerful and emotional chapter, and I´m in tears, I really feel sorry for Mark. He should move to live near Gary and Diane, if I remember correctly he was planning to do that when Trey came back, but there´s nothing stopping him now.

It's been so long, I think I need to go back and read the Jackie-related chapters again to understand what's going on here. Her actions are incredibly cruel. And did her husband try to stop her? I hope Jackie says more than "you should've driven with us" as an explanation before poor Mark leaves with Gary and Diane. Also I hope someone gives her a piece of their mind before they leave. The rushed cremation is the absolute worst thing that could've been done to Mark. Where's Jackie's effing glee coming from? Did she have some sort of breakdown? What does the husband think about all this?

What a tough chapter! The emotions really come through. Mark's relationships to his dad and sister are, perhaps, beyond repair. And, like others here, I'm looking forward to Jackie's husband's response.

Trey's response is gonna be a challenge--with his deployment, he's not gonna be there physically, and think Gary and Dianne are gonna "step up to the plate" to help Mark deal with not only the loss of his mom, but the loss of his dad and sister.

Looking forward to the next chapter!

With all my PC training over the years at work, I really have trouble using the B word when describing a woman. Generally that is a good thing but in this case there is no better word to describe Jackie as a BITCH.

I feel guilty using that word, but what other word describes the venom and meanness in her words and actions?

I even think with Gary and Diane there, they will be picking up Mark's pieces for a while into the future :( . Hopefully no one tells Trey what happened, I'm sure he would be supportive, but along with that would be some guilt that Mark chose him over going to his Mom's funeral. Unjustified guilt, but I'm sure it will be there :(

I don't have wildone's hesitation. Jackie is a BITCH with a giant B. I have to go back and reread the early chapters because I never saw this kind of reaction from her coming. His father's reaction was not surprising. Mark knew what to expect from him but this Jackie thing has to have crushed him. Clearly she wanted to hurt him. I hope her husband lets her have it but I don't think it will matter to her one way or the other. Grief can make people do some strange things but I don't think this has anything to do with Jackie's grief over their mother.

So glad that Gary and Diane are there for him.

I had it ready to go and had decided if I hit a certain point I'd go ahead and post. I hit that point, so I posted. This was a hard chapter, but not everything was unexpected. I think Mark's Dad has pretty much lived up to expectations. It's going to be interesting to see what happens from this point forward, I'm curious to see what you think about what's coming up! As for Jackie... just wait until you find out what's coming up :) Thanks for the review!!!

Poor Mark, that was so cruel, seems like Jackie was ok as long as the boyfriend wasn't major part of Marks life or more precisely unless Mark chose boyfriend over what his sister wanted. I would so like to hit her. Its good that he had Gary and Diane.

Thanks for updating so soon, but now I can't wait for the next chapter

Thank you for the review Morgana! It was cruel and it's interesting to see peoples thoughts on why Jackie is behaving as she is. I don't think you're alone in wanting to hit her, and I'd love to know what you think of the upcoming chapters!

Thank you for the review Geemeedee! There are definitely still lots of questions that need answers for, but they are coming. I'm not sure Mark could handle much more at this point, with as cruel as Jackie is being, but he is strong, and he does have Diane and Gary there. Only time, and upcoming chapters, will answer the remaining questions. I look forward to seeing what you think!

Thank you for the review Robert! I'm glad that the emotions came through as that is something I always worry about, especially in these short chapters. As for Brent... I can't wait to see everyone's reaction when that comes up.

Trey's response... I can only imagine how he's going to react when he finds out what has happened.

Jackie is such a bitch! I definetly have to re-read the story to reevaluate her behaviour.

Somehow the fathers reaction doesn't surprise me, i am just glad that he has Support in from Trey's parents at his side.

LOL. Jackie being a bitch seems to be the consensus amongst my readers. I think once some of the upcoming chapters are out, things will hopefully start making even more sense. As for the father, he's just a complete ass. Gary is so much better. Thanks for the review ninecila!

LOL, it's okay hon, you can use that word to describe Jackie, we won't tell anyone. Besides, it seems everyone else is agreeing with you. You are right that there are very few words that can accurately describe the way she is behaving.

The near future is definitely not looking too promising for Mark. I can also understand your concern about not telling Trey and agree to a point. Mark can confide in him what happened, but perhaps not the venom Jackie spewed about Mark choosing him over his family. It's bad enough Gary and Diane had to hear it. Thanks for the review!!!

ROFL @ your lack of hesitation. I think a lot of people didn't really see any of this coming, but I think if you think back to some of the stuff with Jackie in earlier chapters, you should be able to see some of the signs, but I promise things should become more clear in upcoming chapters. I look forward to seeing what you think of how Brent handles things. Thanks for the review!!!
