Perfectly wonderful sentiment. We set an example for the world, and that's good, but we need to set an example for the downtrodden already here. In this you are absoutely right. My family does our little part... and your right about what it gives you back... a wonderful poem filled with care and feeling... cheers... Gary....

We are "adopting" a family for Christmas. It truly is heartbreaking what some are asking for...an oil change, a turkey, a winter coat, stuff that I and we take for granted. These people are not Syrian refugees. In some cases they are Canadian born people who have fallen on hard times. Why is it that the government can afford to provide billions of dollars to refugees, and other countries with corrupt governments who make sure their people never see a penny, yet give NOTHING to our own needy? I could write reams and reams about how upset this makes me! Sadly I don't think there's any point. Poignant poem, Tim...you truly have a gift.

Hi Coastguard and you are right. Why? Why can't we help our own. My husband said last night as we watched the news, this group of 'refugees' all had matching luggage, all had smartphones. But good for you for doing what you can. We'll be at the mission for part of Christmas helping out. I know what it's like just to want a new pair of socks or some new jeans, a coat. So we do what we can. I'm happy if we can help others, but we need to look in our own backyards too.

Hey Gary. Thanks for reading. You're right Canada can be such a leader, but we need to do more for those who live here now. I kind of dispare about the jobless situation here and the layoffs we hear about everyday. To me, if everyone did a 'little part' so much would be done. Beautifully said! Both the poem and the commentary. Would be nice to see everyone at home have a warm meal and a place to sleep before handing out billions all over the world, but the ones in charge have never had to scrounge through a dumpster hoping to find their next meal.

We can't help everyone, but it certainly is a good feeling knowing that you are helping a "neighbour". I will continue as I am able because it does feel good to help others. Oh, and by the way, you were my inspiration.

Aw, thanks Reader. I was a big user of charity and I always said, one day if I could give back, I would ... and so Mike and I try to stay involved. I think it's great you've found somewhere to donate to. If everyone gave a little, so much could be done!

There are so very many near and far who need help ... it seems those most able to attract attention are those helped first and most and yet there are folk who toil to aid souls lost in shadow.

Hi dugh, I don't know why our Governments forget about their own people when reaching out to others. Then they wonder why there's resentment. But maybe then we have to fix it ourselves, reach out, share something, say hello, donate something. Care it all matters, every little thing you do .. thanks for reading dugh... tim

Tim, I think Dickens would love this poem. It seems very real to me and filled with the true nature of Christmas spirit. You also use the 'trappings' (like mentioning lights and presents) to highlight what is truly important.

Amen. Amen. There is a homeless family, a runaway teen, someone who needs our love and companionship near every one of us today. You have spoken very eloquently of this need. Thank you.

We really do forget that charity begins at home. Next door, in your neighborhood, if we just care to look and reach out and do one small thing for someone in need. The rewards I agree are indeed a thousand fold. Thank you for this very well expressed sentiment Tim.

Hey Def!! Thank you for reading this and for your comments. People think it's all about money, but you can give your time, or an old winter coat, help at your food bank, pick and donate the apples you grow on that apple tree in your yard. It all helps.

To me, we should always help anyone in need, equally. No matter if they are a neighbor facing hard times or a child across the world with little or nothing to eat.. Because at the end of the day, all seven billion of us share one home: earth
