Running with the Pack - 50. Chapter 50

Ethan and Aiden swam hand in hand, enjoying the tropical lagoon’s crystal clear water. Under the watchful eye of their snorkeling and scuba instructor, the pair marveled at the vast variety of life. Ethan felt perfectly at home; much more so than Aiden. Brightly colored fish would come out to investigate the couple only to vanish back into the coral as the two approached. When Ethan dove below the surface by himself, a single clown fish emerged from the safety of a sea anemone and swam to him. It waved its way through his fingers and briefly stopped in front of Ethan’s mask as if to say “Hello.” After another breath of air, he dove once more. Aquatic creatures in brilliant yellows and vibrant blues came out to join the single clown fish swimming with Ethan. As he reached his hand out near the coral, even more of the water’s inhabitants joined the young Elemental. Three seahorses approached and wrapped their tails around his fingers, only letting go when he had to return topside. Aiden and the instructor watched with fascination as they floated on the surface, awed by how nature responded to Ethan’s presence.

The flight had been very long and after eighteen hours in the air and one layover in Los Angeles, Aiden, Ethan, and their entourage stepped off the plane into a tropical paradise. The views ensured everyone it was worth it. A forty minutes boat ride to their final destination, and they could finally relax. The Australian/New Zealand Solaris and Lunaris Councils had graciously offered the use of a private island resort they jointly owned. It was off the western coast of Fiji’s main landmass. The trip made for a nice additional wedding present, so the young couple could have a truly relaxing and private honeymoon. The ten-acre atoll had five guest bungalows spread out across the best section of its white-sand beaches. The full-time staff took care of all the cooking and cleaning. A snorkeling or scuba instructor was on hand for the more adventurous who wanted to explore the delicate reefs surrounding them. Aiden and Ethan had the place for two weeks before they would travel to New Zealand and Australia, acting as ambassadors to build ties between the American Lycan Council and their South Pacific counterparts.

Stepping onto the deck of their bungalow overlooking the lagoon, Ethan and Aiden laid on a lounge chair after their relaxing swim in the warm water. Trevor, Casey, Darius, and Cody were still out in the water, snorkeling with the other instructor. The four were near one of the reefs. Cuddling against his mate, Ethan looked to the western horizon. Aiden smiled at his pup, seeing the happy and content look on his face, as he watched their friends splashing around.

Ethan rested his head on Aiden’s chest, casually running his fingers through the dense fur. “Could it possibly get any better than this?”

“If it can, I really don’t see how. A tropical beach, a gentle breeze, and the man I love with all my heart.”

“I never thought it would be this much fun to swim in a lagoon or dive with the fish.” Ethan pressed himself even closer to his mate. “I didn’t think I’d ever see something like this in person.”

“It’s amazing how everything responded to you. That clown fish really liked you, and those seahorses took to you very quickly.”

“I could feel all the life around me and how it interacts with the water, but mostly I could feel you.”

“With all the fish swimming around you, I could feel something more than I normally do. I’m not sure what it was, but there was something there. I definitely felt your happiness.”

Ethan followed their friends’ activities while never lifting his head off Aiden’s chest. “I’m glad we brought them with us. It’s fun watching the guys out there. I know it’s our honeymoon, but it wouldn’t have felt right leaving them home.”

“I know I could protect you from most anything and with your gifts you can easily defend yourself, but I don’t think we would have gotten far without them. They take their duties of protection very seriously, even if they try to make it look like they don’t. You’re right through. It wouldn’t have felt right leaving them at home. They’re a part of our family and a part of us. We just have to get them well trained for when the time comes that they become babysitters for our kids.”

“I like the idea of having kids with you. I know your Dad and Marsha want to eventually become grandparents.”

“We’ve got several options when we decide it’s time. We can adopt or use a surrogate. We have one offer, and I’m sure there would be others willing to help.”

“If we asked one of the lunis she-wolves, would that increase the chances the pup would be a lunis? I kind of want at least one of each.

“As far as I know, the odds are the same regardless what type the parent is. I think it would be cute having little lunis and lupus Elemental pups running around.”

“I guess until we decide to use alternate methods of having kids, we’ll just have to keep trying the old fashioned way.”

Aiden laughed at Ethan’s comment and enthusiasm.

“Who would have ever thought that getting kicked out of the house would end up making all my dreams come true? Not only do I have you, but I have your world now.”

“Seems like it was destined to always be your world from the start.” Aiden kissed the top of his pup’s head. “That horizon out there is our future. We may not know what is just beyond it, but it is going to be a wonderful journey getting there at each other’s side.”

Ethan straddled his mate’s waist. “You’ve been my future since the day a black wolf found me.” He leaned in to passionately kiss the man he loved. “Thanks to you I found who I am, and I can hold my head high as we run with our pack.”

It's with a smile of accomplishment and a single tear of sadness that I announce this is the final chapter of Running with the Pack. I would like to thank each and every one of you who took the time to read this as well as all those that have commented and sent me messages. While I'm saying Chapter 50 is the last chapter of this book, it's not the end of the story. I never in my wildest dreams thought it would come this far, let alone become so popular. That is in part due to all of you for keeping me motivated to reach this point.
I can't thank @Carlos Hazday enough for all his hard work editing this. The rewrite wouldn't be what it is without him and I couldn't be more proud of how it turned out.
Thank you,
Wolf

Well, Wolf, my heart sang when I saw a new chapter...this has been one of my best Monday events since you started. I'm going to miss all your wonderful characters and their unique view on life and Pack relations.
This was a perfect way to end the first book...now take some deep breaths and get back to planning out a sequel or two...or three. :)
The next one has such scope it will be hard to plot a path for whoever appears in it...even the chance of there being kids for Ethan and Aiden...just try to skip the messy diapers when it gets to that part. :)
Thank you for this wonderful and at times heart-wrenching story!

Geeezzzzz Wolf... trying to come to grips with not looking forward to your Monday updates of love, suspense, and adventure...what shall we do??? The story was absolutely amazing, with your depictions of all the guys have gone through...was like a wonderful "breathe of imagination" for us...we were constantly trying to imagine what new revelations the next chapter would entail and kept enthralled with every character, from Ethan and Aiden to even the little pups!!! Thank you, Wolf ...the journey has been fabulous.. :D Thank you for sharing your amazing writing skills and imagination!!!!!! :thankyou:

Thank you Onim. This has been a fun journey for me with Ethan, Aiden and the rest of the gang at my side (or talking away in my head). With luck, this will just be a temporary vacation from writing until the pack pesters me enough in my sleep to give them renewed life and further adventures.

What a perfect way to pull together the ending of the first book in what I am hoping turns into a full saga... Enjoy what you have accomplished here; because it truly is wonderful, but then get back to work. I demand an equally brilliant second act...

LOL... Thanks for the wonderful story...

Thank you Centex for all your support and encouragement over the last several months. At times it felt like a writing a saga just getting to this point. There are a few ideas, and a few notes already getting jotted down, so we'll see ;)

Ummm...I didn't even notice the word count when I started reading this chapter. When it finished so quickly I was quite surprised. Then I read the bit at the end.

I was so excited because I knew that I was going to mention that I hoped part of the next chapter would be about their visit to Australia and New Zealand. Hello! New Zealander here!

I am trying so hard to be grateful for what I have been given rather than mourning what I will be missing.

No looking forward to Tuesdays (NZ Time Zone), no Ethan, no Aiden, no Pack, no Family. No anything...It's abit of a shock.

Wow!

Okay, Wolf. Thanks so much for enriching my life. Over the top comment? I don't know, but literally true. I have enjoyed everything about this story. There are way too many high-lights to point out any one thing. The exciting thing is, there are so many stories within this story that you have lots of options in regards to where you want to take the story when you come back to it. I am going to miss this story so much and everyone in it. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Take care and see you next time!

Buz, thank you for all your support and encouragement. I've actually looked at my pending file repeatedly over the last two weeks as the chapters waiting to be posted decreased and this week as it sits empty for the first time since I began posting this story. I still find it hard to believe that I never missed a single Monday, although it did get close a few times when characters weren't cooperating in a chapter.

Everyone that has commented since the beginning has helped me improve my writing skills and pushed me to try and raise the bar each week. The compliments on my writing and the popularity of this story make me laugh when I think of my creative writing professor who suggested I would be happier in a different class before failing me saying I had no talent for the art.

Future books are the main reason that several potential plot lines were never addressed or tied off. Mondays may be silent for the moment from me, but I hope to get back to the grind after a much needed break.

Thank you CG. You, like so many others here have been incredibly supportive since I began posting this. I think I had 20 chapters written when I began to post it and it is in part due to the encouragement of you and everyone else I was able to keep up with this. So many people have told me I brightened their Monday and if that isn't the best compliment a person can get, I don't know what is. :)

Noooooooooooooooo. :( You're taking my people away from me. I'm going through withdrawal!!!!! But, I understand that you need a break, you did write 50 chapters. :worship: I guess I can always start over and hope you've decided to gift us with the next story by the time I get back to chapter 50. Thank you for Ethan and Aiden and all the other interesting and intriguing characters. Till next time......:hug:

My Monday's will never be the same. I think I am okay with that. I am thrilled that the story went full circle. It started with Aiden and Ethan and ended with Aiden and Ethan. I recently re-read this from the beginning because I couldn't sleep at night and I was amazed at the directions that the story evolved and part of me worried that it would end with them getting lost in politics. I was thrilled that it brought it around back to them and them starting a new chapter in their life as husbands. Thank you and good luck on any other works you have in the wings.

Thank you LadyDe for all the encouragement and always bringing a smile to my face with your comments. It is an odd feeling of not putting a little time in each day with characters I've spent so much time with. While I try and figure out if and how I can map out a second book that can stand with the first, just consider that they want a little private time on their honeymoon :)

Thank you Taste :) When I picked up writing this after nearly a years break between ch 7 and ch 8, I pretty much through out what I had for blocking out the story. I still had several points I wanted to reach but the way they got there and the people involved continued to change as the story grew on its own. The one thing that didn't change was Ethan and Aiden together somewhere, in each others arms as husbands. This always had to go full circle in my mind. It just took much longer to get there than I ever thought, but I'm happy with the result.

I want more. I want more! Great conclusion to this segment of their story, Wolf. I do want more, however, whenever you are ready to continue the saga. I'm especially interested in seeing what happens once they have children! Kudos to you and thanks so much for sharing with us!!!

Thank you Hill :) I managed to go all of four days before I began working on a basic draft outline for a second book. It may take a little time before I start writing it or begin posting anything, but the new book is in the works.
