Thorny Poetry - 11. Pride

I wrote this one a couple of years ago as a song lyric. It probably works better that way than as a poem, but thought I'd share anyway.

we are running

running into the night

we’ve been dreaming

of catching up with the light

now the doors are locked

and we are stuck inside

but one day they’ll open wide

and we’ll step out with pride

broken fingers

broken minds and broken hearts

that’s what they’ve given us

since the day we first took to the stars

so if we hide in here

will the pain we feel go away

or will we simply find

that the pain is here to stay

mark me with your tongue

let your words ring loud and clear

sister-brother mine

shoulder to shoulder we’ll make our stand here

break down all the doors

and throw the windows wide

we have won the war

now we’ll step out with pride
