Thorny Poetry - 9. A Happy Sad Dream

Based on a dream I had about Amanda Palmer, one of my absolute favourite musicians.

i had a dream

that you and i were friends

you were up on the stage

i was in the audience

it was a wonderful show

i whooped and applauded

and when you came down

by all you were lauded

they stood in a line

waiting to greet you

i stood off to the side

just hoping to meet you

and when you saw me

you cried, ‘Hello there!

I thought that was you;

I was hoping you’d be here!’

when the crowd had dispersed

you told me you’d missed me

that you’d thought of me often

you hugged me and kissed me

you asked me kindly

if i was still on the meds

i said that i was

but i was on the mend

then we made art together

and chatted for hours

we drank lots of wine,

and your healing powers

seeped into my bones;

i was happy again

though the voice of reason said

it must come to an end

and then i woke up;

it had all been a dream

and i wept bitter tears

for what had never been.

But the dream occurred as a dream; and what it was might be or say just as healing as the event itself. Whatever that dream meant to you, it’s incarnation as a poem is quite powerful.

Thank you. It was a good dream. It was just sad to wake up from.
