Thorny Poetry - 41. Moment
Eight years ago today, on the 22nd of July 2011, a right-wing extremist murdered seventy-seven people. He blew up a government office building in Oslo with a car bomb, before going out to the island of Utøya in Buskerud, dressed as a police officer, where he indiscriminately shot children to death with assault weapons, in protest of the Norwegian Labour Party's racially inclusive politics.
I wrote this as a song lyric not long after, but never published it anywhere. Doing so now.
it’s a beautiful summer’s day
all the children go out to play
nobody thought it would end this way
the sun is warm and the sky is blue
all day long i can play with you
believing in things that are good and true
falling out of the sky now
is it my time to die now
seeing truth through the lies
there is nowhere to hide
over in just one moment
don’t you dare to let go of my hand
aching so i can hardly stand
nowhere to go on this piece of land
jump right out and swim away
leave all behind, i cannot stay
wishing that there was another way
strike with a deadly blow now
bullet holes in the snow now
there's no truth in the lie
now we must say goodbye
over in just one moment
