Horrible Writing Advice

Horrible writing advice... Heroes wear white. They ride on high white horses and have shiny plot armor. They are, of course, interesting because who wants to read about a bum, right? Heroes should be flawless role models because seeing them overcome their petty human experience is just plain boring. Villains wear black. Their horses don't really like them. They don't get shiny plot armor because the writers guild demands it! They aren't very interesting because they're just plain old e

Author Guess Who #13

Woohoo!!!! Two months in a row that I've actually managed to do the Author Guess Who blog!  Who's ready for another round of guessing. I am super curious as to whether or now y'all will guess this one!!!  So, let's get right to it!   What is one thing that most GA members might not know about you? I'm German What prompted you to write your first story? A lot of Hosted (yes, I'm dating myself) encouraged me to give it a try. What genre of books do you enjoy reading a

Revisions

I was reading a blog entry by @Comicality the other day concerning revisions of old stories. It struck a note (and has an awesome example of revision in an iconic scene from 'Star Wars') as I have lately been digging out some of my old stories and re-reading them. Some of these things are so old they were printed out on a dot matrix printer (don't ask, kids) or even typewritten, complete with Tipp-Ex corrections. It's always interesting to read back your own work. Sometimes it makes you wince; c

Featured Story: The Transporters

Well. It's time for another story review, this tile from our newest review team member, @Talo Segura. Enjoy! The Transporters by Israfil Reviewer: Talo Segura Status: Complete Word Count: 16,570 I might have said that you ought to know the forgotten realms of Dungeons and Dragons, but you don't. It was the gnolls who made me go and look it up. As might be appropriate to this genre of story, a portal opened into a fantastic world. I should point out this story does not have a

Weekly Wrap Up (Jan. 31 - Feb. 7)

Well...  What a day today has been. I couldn't avoid a lot of stuff anymore so I had to go out in the freezing weather and get a bunch of stuffs done. Left the house at 8:00 and didn't get home to 3:30 😮 This is the weekend, aren't we supposed to relax and sleep in and take it easy?  So I'm curious, as after working 26 years in stores in retail, I know I didn't like when I heard people who talked about their Monday to Friday jobs. Where some of us in retail worked any day of the week.

Revisions

There are so many times when I look back at my older stories, or even just older chapters of stories that I started years ago that I'm currently working on...and there are SO many things that I wish I had changed or done differently. Details that I could have added, 'wordy' and repetitious sections that I wish I had edited out for the sake of brevity and a more potent race to the point, or mistakes that I should have corrected before putting it out there for people to read. Sometimes, I blame th

Empty Nest

Words can’t express how proud I am of our daughter.  Today, J.J. became a home owner! This kid has worked her butt off saving to buy a house.  As a Paramedic, she works very long hours.  She works nights and weekends and sacrifices holidays.  When other kids her age were out partying, she was dedicated to keeping our community safe. J.J. did it all on her own!   Of course I’m nervous for her to leave the nest, but excited to see her grown. 😍

Use the following words in a story - a snow storm, a beach towel, a postcard, an old wallet, and a goat. Prompt 857 - Creative Tag - Healthy Your partner is always wanting to travel, try new foods, and experience new things. Unfortunately, you have been sick and refused to do much. Time to write

I've been spending quite a lot of time over the past few weeks making sure I am several chapters ahead of posting. There are now only two more chapters left of 'Gone Away, Gone Ahead' before reaching the end. I have had a few comments asking if there’s going to be a sequel and over the past few days I’ve been seriously considering that. I'm still working on the prequel, 'Threadfall', and estimate there's probably another 20-30,000 words to go on that. If someone had said to me that I would manag
