Thorn Wilde Posted August 14, 2014 Posted August 14, 2014 So hey, I have a spider tale to tell. In Amsterdam we stayed in a house boat. The house boat had not been tenanted for quite a while. So it was dusty and all the windows were closed. And there were spiders EVERYWHERE. We managed to free ourselves of the inside spiders. That left the outside ones, several of which were ENORMOUS. And lots and lots of mosquitoes, which would come in because there were no window screens. So we did various things to keep out the mosquitoes. But here's the thing. By the fourth or fifth day, the outside spiders had all respun their webs across the windows. Like a vile sort of natural screen. And we had many fewer mosquitoes inside. Makes you think, doesn't it? I would rather have spiders than mosquitoes any day. Gee, I look at this thread and all I think of is "cool." I guess that what a degree in biology does for you. I can't count the number of times I was bitten doing field research as an undergrad. If recently I was bitten on a finger (I don't know when or by what) and it swelled up quite grandly and my husband made me go to the doctor. The doctor agreed that I had a spider bite and that was it. I think my husband was expecting something more to come of it. LOL I love spiders and I'm not afraid of them one bit, and I have nothing like your excuse. I was a bug kid, though. I was the one who always picked up little creepy crawlies and let them walk across my hands. Spiders, caterpillars, beetles, bumblebees, you name it. If it lives in Scandinavia, odds are I've handled it, or at the very least watched it in fascination. I should obviously have become an entomologist. 2

Sasha Distan Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 we don't dare put down a sticky-trap for spiders type thing on the fear that if we did the number and size stuck there in the morning would ensure we never slept again. 2

SolarMaxx Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Itsy Bitsy spider climbing up the spout Down came the rain and washed the spider out Out came the sun and dried up all the rain Now Itsy Bitsy spider went up the spout again! There once was a time when scary spiders lived in other countries, places like Australia and Brazil. Not any more. Just like us, spiders have learned about foreign travel. And now they live in places like ... Britain. Or anywhere with an airport And this is the time of year when spiders come indoors where it's nice and warm. Like into your home. Like under you bed. Or maybe in your hair at night, when you're sleeping. Or, if you sleep with you mouth open, inside you Camel spiders -- wicked! ! ! They may walk in through an open door, or climb in through a window. Or they may be hiding in that bunch of bananas you just bought from the supermarket ... "A mother of two and her family were forced to flee their home after dozens of the world's deadliest spiders hatched from a banana she was eating. Consi Taylor saw the spiders drop off the banana she was halfway through eating after she inspected strange white spots on the fruit's skin. The creatures fell on to her kitchen table before dozens of them started running off across the carpet." Brazillian Wandering Spider http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2487042/Mother-finds-deadly-Brazilian-spiders-nest-banana.html Or lurking in your garden waiting to bite you ... "If you leave them alone ... there is no reason at all why they should attack you". Well that's reasuring - but how do we know spiders act all reasonable when they spot a biting opportunity? Tube Web Green Fanged Wall Spider - yes those fangs really are green, and they can bite through skin as easy as pie http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/wildlife/10404819/False-widow-spider-Meet-the-incy-wincy-terror-whose-range-and-reputation-is-swelling.html Or nesting at your local school - and biting your children ... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-gloucestershire-24623652 And next time you go on holiday to some exotic location keep an eye open for Camel spiders - truly these are the stuff of nightmares Camel Spiders - they get bigger than this and they eat animals ... maybe people too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIeCS8k_Vyc Sweet dreams 1

Site Moderator TalonRider Posted November 2, 2014 Site Moderator Posted November 2, 2014 I know this is slightly off topic, but recently I was sitting in a Doctors office and the TV was turned to a talk show called The Doctors. It had to be their Halloween show as they showed video of a guy that had a live cricket in one ear for a week and then a woman who had a leech up her nose for a month. 1
