Celethiel Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 http://finance.yahoo.com/news/5-things-always-buy-used-134500411.html I don't know about anyone else, but i've been known to buy used movies and used books. books wise i usually buy from Powell's Online store, or the used book sales that the county library puts on twice a month, and i don't think i've ever been burned. As for movies we don't really have much of a place to buy them... you can get some at the Convenience store here but that's it (they used to sell used vids at a grocery store that is now closed) them i have been burned, all i have to say is keep your reciept because if the thing is scratched and doesn't work you can take it back, you can't otherwise and people have been known to sell used movies here just because it's scratched and doesn't work... not very nice... Anything to add to the list? any stories on things you've bought used?
Site Administrator Graeme Posted April 7, 2014 Site Administrator Posted April 7, 2014 Actually, there's a big one that's missing from that list: houses. New houses are more expensive and more work to turn them into a home. I'm not adverse to building, but I'd prefer to buy an established home so I can see exactly what I'm getting. 2
Bumblebee Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Cars! I can't justify buying a new car when you can find brilliant second hand cars for half the price of a new car 1
Zombie Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Cars! I can't justify buying a new car when you can find brilliant second hand cars for half the price of a new car Often true. But not always. Sometimes at the end of a month dealers will offload a car at cost price to hit the volume target which is worth far more than the margin on a car. Then you also get the full warranty Trouble is you need to know all the tricks and have good negotiating skills to beat those pesky salesmen Something else you should always buy used are Strads. If you see a brand new one for sale make sure it comes with a full guarantee...
Palantir Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Strads?? - as in Stradivarius the violin? Ye gods! better check on the pocket money for that one. lol
Mann Ramblings Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 (edited) sex toys not EWWW!!!! (okay... I missed the fine print. LOL) Edited April 8, 2014 by Mann Ramblings 1
Benji Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 ........... I used to go to garage sales every week (a hobby that got me too much junk over the years) But on the other hand I found some of the best deals ever. I really appreciated finding a retired couples new place, with there new lawn now rock and gravel selling an almost new lawn mower, I found a riding one in perfect shape for $100.00 bucks, same model was $1200 in stores!
Kitt Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 College Textbooks if you can hook up with upper classmen who had good grades. The highlights and margin notes are invaluable! Cars? I get leery of buying them used - if they were so great why did the first owner sell it?
Celethiel Posted April 10, 2014 Author Posted April 10, 2014 (edited) coffee pots.... furniture, although you have to be careful about that.... Edited April 10, 2014 by Celethiel
Slytherin Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Stay away from the free mattresses... Eww ! I buy a lot of stuff used. Books, clothes, DVD's and flower pots
Zombie Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 dogs - I'm not a big fan of highly inbred specialist breeds, and they can have serious health issues because of the limited gene pool - if someone's abandoned / unwanted mut can become someone else's much loved pet then that's a good thing 2
Thorn Wilde Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Strads?? - as in Stradivarius the violin? Ye gods! better check on the pocket money for that one. lol Used instruments in general are a good thing. An instrument with a history will treat you better.
Zombie Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 (edited) Used instruments in general are a good thing. An instrument with a history will treat you better. you do need to be careful, though, and know what to look out for - used Joannas can be a heap of trouble . Edited April 10, 2014 by Zombie
Thorn Wilde Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 you do need to be careful, though, and know what to look out for - used Joannas can be a heap of trouble . Well, yeah, but that goes for everything, doesn't it?
Mann Ramblings Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 you do need to be careful, though, and know what to look out for - used Joannas can be a heap of trouble What's a Joanna? I clearly know nothing about musical instruments.
Zombie Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 What's a Joanna? I clearly know nothing about musical instruments. Ah, sorry, jo-ann-nah is cockney rhyming slang for pi-ann-nah - piano Pianos present particular risks second hand so I have to disagree with Thorn that "an instrument with a history will treat you better" if it's a used piano. First they are complex mechanisms - and uprights are much more complicated than grands. Second if they have a history then we're talking use, and the more pianos are used the more worn out they will be. Buyers may be shy of playing in public or may not play at all if, say, they're buying for little Jimmy - in which case they'll be relying on what it sounds like when the owner or salesman plays. And pianos can be made to sound great - when they may not be so great to play.
Mann Ramblings Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Ah, sorry, jo-ann-nah is cockney rhyming slang for pi-ann-nah - piano Oh, thank god. I was suddenly feeling very out of touch there. LOL 1
Sasha Distan Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 all your furniture apart from a mattress. seriously there is not a single stick of new furniture in out house apart from the bed.
Suvitar Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 all your furniture apart from a mattress. seriously there is not a single stick of new furniture in out house apart from the bed. Sounds like my furniture, bed is new and three of my bookselves, everything else is old family stuff or bought used. Most of the books I need and want for my work can only be bought used. And I´ve always bought a lot of my clothes used.
Celethiel Posted April 11, 2014 Author Posted April 11, 2014 There very few new things in my apartment, all my furniture is second hand (well except for one or two things anyway), most my books... at least half of my dishes, an 8th of my movies, the only things i really haven't bought used are my clothes... but then a boy has to be fashionable doesn't he perhaps if i found clothing I "liked" second hand i'd buy it... i just haven't found any.... well there is something you shouldn't buy second hand... underwear
mickey1952 Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 I was driving by a house a couple of weeks ago that was having a sale. I normally don't frequent garage sales, so I surprised myself. They just got Dad settled into the nursing home and hadn't even announced or advertised this sale. I came away with a slightly used microwave for $20 that's selling at Walmart for $80, and a once-used toaster oven with convection heat for $40 that's going for $100 at Walmart. Used can be pretty good sometimes.
