When I edited that part, I thought about it, and it made sense to me. The point Allie was making was it sometimes take losing something to make a person see the light. 

 

“That’s not the same though, Al.  You didn’t treat him like he was your dirty secret.”    To me, this is the same as saying... I left Alek because he treated me like a dirty secret... you didn't do that to Landon... so it's not the same... Landon resisted for a different reason than I did... he should have come to his senses... I'm not so sure that applies to me and Alek...

 

So, in other words, Lit's not comparing the people so much as the situation... just how I saw it

I asked LL, and she said At the time Liam says that, he actually thought Allie was saying she was the one who messed up with Landon. and From what Liam heard up to that point she was the one pursuing the relationship.   

 

I'm still confused, though. Has anyone else considered this part of chapter 15. I mean I can see why Allie would tell her story and what her point is in relation to Alek. And that one compares Landon to Alek in that they both realized what they were going to lose by denying the truth.

 

Liam making a mistake and misunderstanding should perhaps not be a surprise, but it puzzled me how he drew that conclusion.

 

I think the important comment is that Liam saw himself as Alek's dirty little secret - that is how Liam defines their relationship

 

The important difference is Landon hurt Allie because he was dense, Alek did it knowingly and repeatedly to Liam and Liam let him. Just like his bitterness with his father, Liam needs to... damn it... that  Disney song is stuck in my head... Liam needs to Let it go

So maybe Alek does deserve Liam, an emotional stunted man unable to communicate with someone until they are dead.

I know he was the grownup, the parent but it must have been hard for Liam's dad too. He lost his wife. That didn't make it easier for Liam but a little bit of sympathy for the dad's loss is not out of place

I thought about this some more. Liam said at the beginning of the story, he couldn't stay in the relationship unless Alek came out to his parents and gave his boyfriend higher priority in his life. Alek couldn't do it, so Liam dumped him. It stands to reason that in order to restore Liam's belief in Alek enough to take him back it  would demand more than the original ultimatum. After all, the previous times Alek fucked up, he got Liam to take him back by promising to do better, but it never happened. So this time Alek needs to show he's serious.

Another way of putting it could be Alek should complete his coming out for his own sake. It has nothing to do with Liam taking him back. But if Alek does it, he's a new man, and Liam might see the chances of their relationship in a new light. It's not as if Liam has actually told Alek what to do as a prerequisite to win him back.

 I see your point.  Right now, we, like Liam, are in the dark to what extant Alek has come out of the closet. However, I am sure both Liam and us will be enlightened in later chapters.

At this point, I think he has shown he's serious. He actually came out to his bigoted father, that takes some serious guts. And to add to that, he worked with Jason to ensure his business wouldn't be held hostage by his father. That takes planning and thinking ahead. Summed up, I do think all these actions indicate that he is taking this seriously.

Conservative parents will put continuous pressure to moderate or minimize actions, activities, and behaviors that are deemed to be embarrassing to the family. Even a decade after their passing, my parents still keep me from being as Open and Out as I might be. Things you learn from your parents, sometimes through ‘osmosis,’ can be extremely persistent.

 

Alek is never going to be completely Out.

The key word is could. But even then, I am skeptical that he would crawl back into the closet, there is no financial incentive to do so. As for emotional, sure his mom could try to guilt trip him, but... I am confident that Alek will hold his resolve in that case.

 

Edit to add: To everyone, especially Anti-Alek fans, how would you define completely out? Should Alek tell everyone he encounters that he is gay? Like, if he meets a new person, should he say, "Hello, my name is Alek and I'm gay!" or will you be satisfied that he is out to only his friends and family and not complete strangers?

I've never disclosed my sexuality to random strangers, and would never expect anyone else to do so.  

 

(edit: I've seen firsthand how friends of mine who weren't "loud and proud" were not considered out 'enough' for other LGBT acqueantances/friends. It's not an ecpection made on us  'straight' folks)

 

I'm also curious what other readers think Alek needs to do to be "out" in their eyes.

Constantly wearing a t-shirt saying "I'm a homo and I love Liam" would be a good start
