I sketched out the following moody Tanka several days ago. It sat on my desk, overwhelmed with thoughts of how to change it: alternate lines; different wordings; scrapping the whole damn thing. So this morning, I not only typed it -- keeping most of the poem as first scrawled -- but, as I completed it, suddenly felt an urge to translate it into Japanese. An interesting impulse, for the translation "finds the balance" missing in the original, and winds up beautifully optimistic. So, here they are, original and Japanese version. -------------------------------------------- Tanka: Proud moon from behind The now too-cloying cloud rolls, Once you gave me hope That I’d find a place to shine, When young, many moons ago. 短歌: そら そら を、 月の風見るば、 うれしい で 明日言葉は 輝く出るば。 Tanka: Sora sora wo, Tsuki no kaze miruba, Ureshii de Ashita kotoba wa Kagayaku dereba. https://translate.google.com/?sl=ja&tl=en&text=%E3%81%9D%E3%82%89%20%E3%81%9D%E3%82%89%20%E3%82%92%E3%80%81%E6%9C%88%E3%81%AE%E9%A2%A8%E8%A6%8B%E3%82%8B%E3%81%B0%E3%80%81%E3%81%86%E3%82%8C%E3%81%97%E3%81%84%20%E3%81%A7%20%E6%98%8E%E6%97%A5%E8%A8%80%E8%91%89%E3%81%AF%E8%BC%9D%E3%81%8F%E5%87%BA%E3%82%8B%E3%81%B0%E3%80%82&op=translate

Xaxazana, EC, South Africa. isiXhosa, the language of most inhabitants of the Eastern Cape, uses the letter X a lot. It sounds like a click, that you make on the side of your mouth with your tongue and cheek.

The Meeting and A Huge Surprise
Lee Wilson commented on Lee Wilson's story chapter in The Meeting and A Huge Surprise
Of course. OK, so he's only 80% gay. Hmmm, I guess we'll see. Yep. Feel free to repeat this comment in chapter 2. -
Poor Ian. It’s hard to have so many expectations at just five years of age. He may have the smarts, but he doesn’t have the maturity yet, as witnessed b6 his meltdown about learning the technicalities of the language of music. I don’t quite get the determination to make Gaea like Earth II. Things had gone so wrong there, I would think they would want a completely fresh start. Name your cities and locations after places on Earth I. That’s fine. But make a break and make a new society with more care for each other and the world on which you are now living!

My eyes are very tired this morning; for a second I read that as "kilo more cock". Koroop, in Victoria (VIC), Australia, population 80 in the 2016 census.

As a kid in the 70s 80s. I loved Xanadu... Still do. I always saw Gene Kelly in it and thought, what a way to go out!? Love the story...

How come you cringe? The formal name for the system is Global Positioning System, thus GPS. Satnav is a rather colloquial name for GPS, and seems to be limited to the UK only. I've not heard it called satnav outside the UK. And it’s wrong. GPS is the system of satellites made by the US, but around the world the Chinese, Russians, and Europeans deployed BDS, GLONASS, and Galileo respectively. Referring to any of them by their name for the use of navigation in a car is inaccurate. It is a navigation system or satellite navigation system that utilizes the satellites in the sky to work, but the thing in your car is not the satellite itself. It’s like calling a cell phone a cell tower. Satnav refers to the thing in your car, not the thing in the sky, and I appreciate that hugely. 😂

April 21, 2004 Escorial Palo Alto, CA Will I opened the door to find my father there with Jake behind him, as if he were Jake’s human shield. “Welcome home,” Dad said, and embraced me warmly. I thought it was nice that he’d taken off his tie and shed his jacket, as if to announce that he was no longer Mr. Corporate America. “I missed you,” I said warmly. Dad looked at Travis, then at Jake, then back at Travis, pretty much just like I had, then finally kicked h

Wow. Heavy, as we used to say in the 70s and 80s. -
mustang - Word of the Day - Wed Apr 10, 2024
CarlHoliday commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
The original Mustang Ranch Brothel was the first licensed brothel in Nevada when it opened in 1971. This led to the opening of brothels in 10 of the 17 counties in the state. Mustang Ranch was surrendered to the federal government in 1999 when the owner was convicted for tax fraud, racketeering, and other crimes. The ranch was auctioned off by the government on eBay for $145,100 and opened five miles east at Exit 28 on Interstate 80 where it continues to operate. -
Chapter 16 — Awakening
Thomas Wells commented on Biff Spork's story chapter in Chapter 16 — Awakening
Biff, Thanks for letting me know about this other story. It was excellent too. I am 80 and can't get around very easily, but I worry about the Climate problems that are affecting our planet. I pray that someone will take the right action needed to fix the problem before it is too late. Thanks again for the great story. tjw -
Yeah, most of the originals have died. The inspiration for the story happened late 80’s or early 90’s. 3 Dog Night, the dance troupe, and the attraction to a dancer were real. The rest of it, not so much. I still have one of the songs they used on my playlist.

@Zuri, dude you get serious props! I spent 10 minutes looking through previous chapters and googling Osiris. You took it over the top! I also loved Stargate. @drown, I'll take 80% this early in a mystery every day!

Wow, Andre's story brought back many memories for me. I am 80 now. But, at about 11, I had a similar experience. I am glad that the story had a positive ending for Andre. TW

I did, and it was during their era of very strict rules about onstage and offstage. You had to behave as though you WERE truly living in the Elizabethan era the entire time, back in the 80s. I was a seller for this man who made wooden, decorative boxes. I have wanted to be on most television shows! That's two yeses because I didn't see the first one addressed at all. Never have I ever had a threesome I enjoyed!

I've been blasting this music on repeat for a while now. Gotta love the 80s.

Larry, Harry, and Barry were the names of the triplets in an episode of the 80's cartoon Beverly Hills Teens.
