  1. I sketched out the following moody Tanka several days ago. It sat on my desk, overwhelmed with thoughts of how to change it: alternate lines; different wordings; scrapping the whole damn thing. So this morning, I not only typed it -- keeping most of the poem as first scrawled -- but, as I completed it, suddenly felt an urge to translate it into Japanese. An interesting impulse, for the translation "finds the balance" missing in the original, and winds up beautifully optimistic. So, here they are, original and Japanese version. -------------------------------------------- Tanka: Proud moon from behind The now too-cloying cloud rolls, Once you gave me hope That I’d find a place to shine, When young, many moons ago. 短歌: そら そら を、 月の風見るば、 うれしい で 明日言葉は 輝く出るば。 Tanka: Sora sora wo, Tsuki no kaze miruba, Ureshii de Ashita kotoba wa Kagayaku dereba. https://translate.google.com/?sl=ja&tl=en&text=%E3%81%9D%E3%82%89%20%E3%81%9D%E3%82%89%20%E3%82%92%E3%80%81%E6%9C%88%E3%81%AE%E9%A2%A8%E8%A6%8B%E3%82%8B%E3%81%B0%E3%80%81%E3%81%86%E3%82%8C%E3%81%97%E3%81%84%20%E3%81%A7%20%E6%98%8E%E6%97%A5%E8%A8%80%E8%91%89%E3%81%AF%E8%BC%9D%E3%81%8F%E5%87%BA%E3%82%8B%E3%81%B0%E3%80%82&op=translate

Gold can grow on trees. This actually happens. When a tree has deep root growth, it can “strike gold” and absorb it through a biochemical process and in turn deposit the mineral into the tree’s bark and leaves.

He said he would crucify them when free, and it was laughed off as a playful joke. Upon release, he raised a fleet, returned and crucified them.

    -Toe wrestling

    14.Toe-wrestling.jpg

In 1974, drinkers in a British pub were bemoaning the fact that the UK didn't produce world champions, so they invented a sport that no one else knew about: toe wrestling. In 1976, a Canadian visitor competed and won, so with the point of the sport gone, the "World Championship" was discontinued.

    Chapter 4

Well with the counting of the early comments...votes...75% are begging for a continuation...I'd have to agree with them, giving you 80% for more of this story....
  5. Small price to pay for a few hours of fun and honestly the best decade of music ever. With a few exceptions, the 80s rock!
  6. This isn't fair. I am 80 and will never have an Adam or a Kai. But please keep up the great work. Each chapter is so engaging.

Thank your lucky stars. The last person who trimmed my 80 plus year old ones killed the crap out of them.
  9. You have to understand that 80% of the English language comes from French and words got changed through poor pronunciation or accents. Hence, couleur (coo-ler) French, became colour (cul-ler) British, became color (cul-law) American. That's what happens with language, just as usage changes. You might say it's lazy speech or you might say it's simply inevitable. As we progress into the future we start to find missing, mis-spelled, and wrong words, and this because often written articles are dictated if they are even published by humans!

    14: Finley

Finley's life has become more complicated and uncertain. He agrees he is strongly attracted to Emment who he thinks is an elf or some part Fae. This means his family and father might reject him. Plus his twin could be motivated to destroy Emment and his hoard. Dragons could live 800 years. Emment ,if he is and elf might live 80 years. If Finley really commits and acknowledges Emment, then he will die when Emment dies. Finley needs to find out more about his situation and talk honestly with Emment. Finley needs to open up to to Emment who needs to come clean with Finley.

  12. Interesting regional difference. Here on the East Coast, we're more likely to refer to freeways as expressway, and we don't use "the" in front of it. So instead of saying, "I'm going to take the 101 freeway", you'd say "I'm to take 95."

    Chapter 2 - Kai

As a conscript into the South African Defence Force in the late 80s, I remember all too well the excitement of receiving letters from friends and family. These two are both quite formal, old-fashioned gentleman types. I'm intrigued and look forward to seeing where these letters take them. 🤔
  17. Just for @Albert1434 and @Page Scrawler, the recipe for white pudding;- Ingredients 395gm Pork Shoulder (with plenty of fat) 265gm Medium Oatmeal 250gm Water 30gm Onion 23gm Potato Flour 15gm Salt 18gm Seasoning Mix – see below Seasoning Mix 5gm White pepper 5gm Ground coriander 5gm Ground ginger 5gm Powdered sage 3gm Mace 3gm Nutmeg 2gm Allspice Only 18gm of this mix is used in the sausage above. Method Soak the oatmeal in the water for 1 hour or so. Grind the meat and onion through the fine plate of a mincer, I used a 5mm plate. Then add all the other ingredients and mix well. The sausage meat will be on the stiff side. Stuff into large pigs’ casings and poach them at 75°C – 80°C for 1 minute per mm of the width of the sausage. The final internal temperature of the sausage should be 72°C. Hold at this temperature for 2 minutes then cool in ice-cold water. To eat, slice crossways into 5 – 10mm slices and fry until brown.

    Chapter 20 - Kai

Here in Central Massachusetts, we are under a tropical heat wave with temps from the low 80's to mid-90's and expected temps to reach a real-feel temp of 100 tomorrow. Humidity, and I need to remember it isn't the heat but the stupidity @Summerabbacat..., in the 70 plus range. Spoke with my neighbor farmer yesterday and he told me his dog was chasing the cat...both were lying down... I just loved the slow burn of this chapter and the character development... @Andr0gene, were you leading me on about Ch 21...I just laid in an extra box of tissues and freshly washed bath/shower towels... Well, in Europe, where I live, we're in heat, we're hot, we're simmering, we're smoldering, it's quite warm.
  19. You have assumed he did not have anal sex with Sabrina @Cane23. Sassy Sabrina may have liked it for all we know. I have two female friends (one whom is 82 years of age) who have admitted during discussions about sex that they liked anal almost as much as vaginal. One of them (not the 82 year old) even likes rimming. LOL. OMG that would have been just too funny.
  20. It's not quite 930 in the morning and we are already at a feels like temp of 95. Should be somewhere around 110 by this afternoon. I just stocked up the work freezer with Popsicles and fruit juice bars as well as snacks for my staff. Five cases of water should last us a few weeks. We're moving into the two worst months of the year. At least this year we're getting rain everyday. The cloud cover helps with the temps but increases the humidity so no real cooling effect. Stay cool and hydrated and have a good Friday Eve!
  21. Ministry of Drewth revisionism. I’ll trust my actual memories of the 80s and 90s.

Your story is number one on the most recommended so far for 2024. Certainly had me curious and now..hooked! Seen heaps of police procedural dramas from The Bill, Vera and Morse along with many from the 80s and 90s. Perfect descriptions!!!

They did. Lightning hit a transformer and power wasn't back until 3:00 the day after.

  24. And here in glorious Massachusetts, it's gonna be 80 degrees today with no humidity!!
