One Hundred and Fifty-Five Sonnets - 19. Sinbad's portal

.

Sonnet No. 37

Despite the struggle, the strain, the effort,

Nothing intimidates like a blank sheet,

Simply because of what it can support,

If I get it right, and not incomplete.

The truth is, it's late and I am tired –

I ache within to speak with you now,

And perhaps I'm more sad than inspired,

Knowing that's the one thing Fate won't allow.

So I strain with pen, and struggle with ink

To drive the sleeplessness away by will,

And maybe selfishly in me I think

You have your own blank spot with me to fill.

Thus, connected by desire, and pain too,

"Good night, my love" might be the best we can do.

Sonnet No. 38

Come with the stillness of a cat, and lace

Hallow fingers quietly through my hair,

Then lie your chest full on my back in place,

To pin me as your captive then and there.

My eyes will open in the dreamy sight

Of your arms coming round to press my lips,

And the urge to kiss your flesh I won't fight,

Feeling your full weight settle on my hips.

Move my hair; kiss my neck and ear, and please

Tell me the words to open my portal –

Whisper them with assurance and with ease,

And slip off the bond that says I'm mortal.

Open up my passage with your measure,

Like Sinbad's cave spread rich with treasure.

Number 37 had my heart aching. I know the blank sheet's intimidating terror, its voice telling me of all the spaces I cannot seem to fill. You are eloquent in reminding me of the fear that I cannot speak, but on the page.

Number 38 set my heart racing. The temperature in the room rose visibly. This sonnet was quite unforgettable, and the allusion to Sinbad...oh, my...was perfect.

Thank you for your kind and wonderful review, Parker. Aching and racing – I'll take that! I think this pairing speaks pretty well about inner and outer space – and 'sheet' is a wonderful image these poems come back to over and over again.

Thanks once again for all of your amazing support and encouragement. It means a lot to me.

K, 38 I like, it's very sexy and hot if I'm honest and I like it very much.

But 37, is touching and beautiful - that ache of missing him, wanting him or just to hear his voice, but not being able to.

Both of these are amazing, you surpassed your own high water mark with these AC.

Thank you, Tim! You offer wonderful encouragement and praise, and I appreciate it. I like your take on both poems, and it all makes me smile :)

Thanks again!

An interesting pairing, AC!

The first, we clearly see what's blank, and it's not paper. There is a poignant yearning but with resignation--"it's late, and I am tired." A very sad sonnet.

The second is downright filthy! Well, in a poetic sort of way. Much too blue for me, but my alter-self thoroughly enjoyed it.

Of course, he would.

Oh, skinny! You saying I'm a dirty boy…? *blinks innocently* I'm glad you (or at least a not-to-be-named part) enjoyed No. 38. We won't tell the rest of you what it's really about ;)

Also, thank you for your comments on No. 37; I think you may have nailed it.

Cheers as always, my friend!

Wow!!! A new look on Love and Love-Making, if I am correct. You have presented it perfectly. So charm and lovely as well as hot. Love is so pure in those two poems. I Love them... :)

~Emi.

Thank you, Emi. You say love is so pure in these poems, and you make my heart soar. I'm lucky to have your support and feedback. You're always kind to me and my work.

All my best!
