One Hundred and Fifty-Five Sonnets - 42. afire

.

Sonnet No. 83

In life I have neither fame nor fortune,

And my hope hangs on by an onion thread,

While to the pits of anguish I tailspin,

Wishing the piece of me that still cares, dead.

This is perhaps one I won't let you read,

For my despair has no place in your life,

And my only wish is for you to speed

Towards my love and away from your strife.

But – my brain's hurt and tired; it craves sleep –

If I had a switch to power it down,

I could let me crumple into a heap,

And recycle every sorrow and frown.

Do you see what my tired mind says here? –

It wants to rest, but can only when you're near.

Sonnet No. 84

Everywhere my mind turns, inspiration's there –

History, Physics, Religion and all –

Disciplines upon our love come to bear,

That make of me a rhetorical thrall.

Once you sent me a poem you'd written,

And you did so with an apology,

Yet, it proved that you are deeply smitten,

For no other field offered analogy.

No one had ever done that for me before,

So it almost brings a tear to me now,

As it said I am the one you adore,

And all your poetry on me endow.

While outside worlds might help this inspire,

Your love from the inside keeps me afire.

Chapter Comments

The first is sad, yet beautiful in its anguish, and the need of the one you love. You speak to him, but wish to spare him your pain, when only he can cure it.

The second too is full of love, and gratitude that he who you love would care enough to write for you. And you the receiver, love it with all your heart, no matter the quality.

Two beautiful poems!

AC these are both beautiful.

Oh 83 i thought sad in a way, yet generous and full of love.  You want to spare him your pain because you don't think it belongs in his life. Yet, that's wrong. Love is sharing. It is sharing all you are, not only the good parts. Not sharing your pain, does your partner a disservice because you are not letting them have the opportunity to give to you, what you do them.

In 84 you are telling him, he is your inspiration. Yes so is all the world but the love he shares is home and strength, and the love that you need.

These were a beautiful way to start my day .. thank you, AC. xo

There is a keen simplicity in the poems, and the message they carry speak of a great love.

Beautiful, AC.

I love these for the simple and direct yearning they express. The couplet in Number 83 succinctly expresses the need for your beloved; without him, the mind cannot rest. Number 84 speaks to me of how pale those things are which hold our attention compared to your beloved. And when he wrote a poem for you, how much more does that inspire? How lucky you were. I particularly liked 84 for all your poetry on me endow. That line made me smile especially.

Dear AC, here are my thoughts to the sonnets :-)

No 83
The sleepless night, when all sorrows run around in circles and only the presence of the loved one can grant quiet and peace. "For my despair has no place in your life,", sounds even more sad and the possibility that the loved one, does not come to see the lines is so sad as well. You captured these emotions, and they work every time I read it.
Great work!

No 84
I love this poem from the first time I read it. First it shows the magic of so many things, which can inspire a poet, but then it draws such sweetness and a private picture of love between two people, that it makes me smile so wide. It is a heartwarming poem to read in every occasion, in which you need light.
And both poems in contrast are perfect!

Thank you, Mike. I can ask for no higher praise than beautiful. Your comments tell me you have connected to the poems fully, and make me grateful to receive such confirmation that they come through loud and clear.

I think these two poems deal with some tough emotions, but I wouldn't have them unsaid. Thanks again.

Thank you, Tim. Great comments! On No. 83, yes, sharing and being willing to expose, that is part of love. So too is following the instinct to protect; I think you know about that as well.

No. 84: I am a bit taken back by how people receive this poem, not because the interpretations don't match mine, but that the poem connects so directly with readers. The response makes me feel humble. Sometimes it very challenging sharing such an intimate thing as a love poem, yet ultimately rewarding to know it's message resonates in the heats of others.

Thanks for another wonderful set of comments, and your commitment to reading my work. Muah.

Thank you, Parker, dear friend. It's great to hear these poems speak with directness and emotion. I suppose that's how I wrote them, dashing off the lines as they came and focusing on the soul underneath them.

I appreciate your reading these and all of my poetry. Thanks again!

Lyssa, thank you for your awesome comments. In terms of inspiration for 'big picture' items, I recall first being wooed to the power and potential of the Sonnet by Shakespeare's W.H Sonnet relating to the functions of the tide. He mentioned how one waves laps onto the shore, while underneath it is a hidden current rushing just as vehemently back out to sea. Now we know that as the riptide, and I found it awesome to learn a single poetic form can take the mind on wild adventures far outside the mind. No. 84 mentions some of the inspirations that came to me while I was deep in this project, writing at least one Sonnet a day, sometimes as many as four. But, like I say, inspiration was everywhere I turned.

Thank you again, poetic sister of mine, for reading my work and giving me such wonderful observations on it. Muah
