Musings of a Messed Up Mind - 4. Not To Die Alone

Poor dog.. still makes me cry

Not To Die Alone

Vicious men kicked and beat him
Yelping - he ran away
I found him later injured.
Silent in the alley he lay
Blood seeping from his open wounds
Eyes filled with pain and fear
I sat down then and touched him and
watched him slip away ...

Oh damn... :,( It's hard for me to read the death of someone. At least he had someone with him in his final moments.

Thanks for this chapter Tim

The cruelty of man... and the compassion of a man. A hard one to digest... at least the last hand to touch him was a kind one... Gary

Eyes may be the windows to the soul for most, for you I get the feeling it's your poems in your case. Each one gives me a glimpse. And I like what I see. Someone imperfect, struggling, yet wise enough to recognize a misstep, take a lesson from it and keep mioving.
Don't ever stop living, or writing.

And some would say it was only a dog ... much as they might say only a rentboy.
I admire the skill in the telling but the telling brought me deep hurt and sadness.

Tim,
If you didn't say it was about a dog, I never would have known. I thought of a person, literally shunned and beat down by life, who found comfort at the hand of someone who showed him kindness when he most needed it. So, it works as a great metaphor!
And people who are cruel to animals...low life forms..

Carlos, thank you so much for you thoughtful comments. Poetry is a release, an outlet. I don't work on them.. they are there or they're not, it's like tears but in words. Thank you for your support and your time.

I wish the men who did this could read your words and feel shame, but I'm also certain that would never happen.
Even though you made me cry, I was heartened in the end reading your words that to me, are filled with compassion and caring.

Gary, even when I lived out there, was high or hungry cruelty was never okay with me. I've stolen, broke laws, but never shit like that. I've been beaten by men who loved it...and I still don't know how they can do it to dogs, women kids.. I dont understand. Thanks for reading Gary.

Hi Reader thanks for reading and for your comments. Sorry if this upset you. Sometimes I'm not sure why I share this stuff with you all. I think I hope it opens peoples eyes to what it can be like on the other side of the fence in places we rather not look.

Thanks again,

Writing is a powerful thing. It can set us poets free, if free is where we want to go, or it can bind us even tighter to the past for right or wrong reasons.

I'm glad you wrote this poem. And I sincerely hope you did to let it go. Let the puppy be free and simply know at least you did good by him. You probably did not wonder up on his dying moments accidentally, and for that to be true, then we must have faith in a higher order.

Thanks for posting this, Tim. It's powerful.

AC, poetry usually sets me free, releases me from things that haunt me and my dreams. Life I've said before I don't work on them, they are just there, written in my head when it's their time.

Thank you for your kind support of my writing. It is generous and appreciated more than you know.

I found this sad but so beautifully compassionate. At least he wasn’t alone in his final moments. Very effective piece.

I once saw a bumper sticker, "Animal abusers, go to hell."  Yup, I don't like animal abusers myself, so amen to that.  Hope the doggie went to dog heaven.
