LJH Posted May 16, 2012 Author Posted May 16, 2012 Nope. Not The Power of One...that's Bryce Courtney. Zombie needs to confirm his choice. And then supply the author's name. hehehe...
Zombie Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Well it has to be OOA because you'd have mentioned lions if it was BF But I can't remember the author
Frostina Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 heh! Tease me all you want, Mr. Z. BUT this is quite an old book too! sheeeesh! anywhooo... SInce it's still here... The author is Isak Dinesen / Karen Blixen. sooo... your turn, Mr. Z.
Zombie Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Noooo, your go. You obviously knew the author whereas I just made a wild guess at the title
Frostina Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Noooo, your go. You obviously knew the author whereas I just made a wild guess at the title the last title... i didnt know the author either. lol Besides, i knew this one from the beginning and thought i'd let someone have a crack at the dead non-English author! sooo... go!
Zombie Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 OK, I need to think of something *cackles horribly ....*
Zombie Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 OK here it is. And, um *cowers* it's by a dead author . But not dead that long. And it was first published in English "He had, after all, chosen this cloistered life with his eyes open, he could not complain even of those parts of it he found unattractive, when the whole suited him very well, and gave him the kind of satisfaction he felt now, as he straightened his back and looked about him. He doubted if there was a finer Benedictine garden in the whole kingdom, or one better supplied with herbs both good for spicing meats, and also invaluable as medicine."
Andy78 Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 I know it's one of the Brother Cadfael books by Ellis Peters. I love the Cadfael series, Derek Jacobi was brilliant in the TV adaptation I think it's from A Morbid Taste for Bones
Red_A Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Do you realise there are 20 odd books in this series and that the author goes under two different pen names. And it is tanalising as I can go thru all 20 odd books
Andy78 Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 I do Red. I'm about halfway through the series, I've just started The Raven in the Foregate.
Zombie Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Well done Andy - yep, you're right, its the first one - first page! She was born and lived in the area around Shrewsbury which accounts for the real sense of place in the books. Luckily she lived just long enough to complete the series. There was also an excellent radio adaptation, played by Philip Madoc whose voice was just perfect. Your turn ....
Andy78 Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 "This is a handy cove," says he at length; "and a pleasant sittyated grog-shop. Much company, mate?" (sic)
comicfan Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Okay I taught this book. Treasure Island by Robert Stevenson. There is little doubt in my mind I am wrong about this one.
comicfan Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Give a bit. I'll go looking for something fun to guess at. (cackles wickedly)
comicfan Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Okay I enjoy this book a lot. The only thing is I am skipping the character's name which is part of the title. On a Thursday afternoon, just after tea, Character's Name saw smoke. He happened to be looking out of his window when a dark cloud lifted above the autumn trees. The wind blew it south and it moved through the sky like a great, floating whale. Good luck.
Andy78 Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 **sits in the corner and mutters incoherently to itself**
comicfan Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 The author is English and modern. Sorry, Frosty, not doing old dead authors and yes they wrote in English first.
Andy78 Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 **doesn't really do modern and English** Jenny Nimmo - The Secret Kingdom?
Andy78 Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Damn, she's written so many books. The Blue Boa?? (released as Charlie Bone and the Invisible Boy in the US)
comicfan Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Right Series so I guess I will let you off the hook. The first in the Charlie Bone series. Midnight for Charlie Bone. Actually the whole series was good and now she is working on a sort of prequel with the Red King Series
Andy78 Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 "He had never been taught to say his prayers. He had never heard of God, or of Christ, except in words which you never have heard, and which it would have been well if he had never heard."
