The first time I heard a rattlesnake in person was just four years ago, in Death Valley. Instead of sounding like a maraca like on TV, it was like a tiny chainsaw or a hand buzzer. Bursting as it did out of complete silence, I thought I'd already died for a second, and it had started slithering away when I figured it what it was.
