FanFiction about your world

Myr's bumping of his FanFiction topic got me thinking. How would you, as an Author feel about someone writing a story in your world?

For me, I wouldn't mind. Though, the two main worlds my stories are in, are not fully fleshed out on GA. I have notes on them and would answer questions if asked. But, yeah, I wouldn't mind if someone wrote a story in either the Guardian Force Saga Universe or The Half-Elven Warlock one.

As long as credit is given... have at it.  I see them as different things.   Unless I was to collaborate with someone.

I've had people draw fan art of my characters before, which was super awesome.  I'm not sure how I would feel about someone writing about my characters, though, that would be weird.

I normally write romantic dramadies/satire/or just plain dramas. So it's very rare for writers to recreate or do a series on it. But I guess to be honest, speaking for myself if someone created a sequel or a prequel to my novel, there's that bit of jealous novelty I'd feel if the said prequel or sequel or a romantisation of my story proved to be a very good read...I'd feel 'Darn it, why didn't I ever think of that.'

And then the pride of a father seeing his child in front of a stage getting a diploma would soom usher to my entire being. Because can you imagine? If my stories or novels would have inspired another writer to simply create. That would be bloody fantastic.

I wouldn't mind if they'd work with me on certain things to help keep things consistent to the Universe. I'd find it helps in Universe building, actually. A fictional universe can be a collaborative project if the original author maintains 'Project Manager' status. George Lucas did this with the Legends (Expanded Universe) for Star Wars. Each book he read and gave the blessing to. That's why I still think the Expanded Universe was where Lucas may have wanted to go with his characters rather than where Disney took it.

Comicality has been very patient and sweet with my being allowed to play in his back yard. I find I work extra hard on things that are his original creations so that I can be double-sure they are consistent with the universe he created. Collaborating with him on the story I'm writing with him has been very rewarding and it seems he gets energized by my excitement in the story. It's creating a 'feedback' loop with him as the dynamo and I as a circuit.

I've actually gotten an interested go ahead in adding a story within his Gone From Daylight universe!

So, if done with love and in such a way that it respects the original authors vision, I think I would be very flattered indeed if someone wanted to run with one of my minor underdeveloped characters and give them three dimensions. I'd also not have a problem if they wanted to FanFic an established character! It's fascinating to see what take another person can have on the same character.

I actually find it rather endearing! What amazes me most is that the authors who usually take a stab at something like that, often know the material better than I do. I write a lot of stuff 'in the moment', and I have a specific viewpoint and a structure that I create to touch on all the emotions and plot points that I want to have be a part of each chapter. But readers and fans see things from a much more personal perspective. They relate to characters and situations in a deeper way than I do. They find different angles, different details, different possibilities. So seeing them brought to life through their eyes adds another dimension to what I did before. And it's like, "Hey! That's cool! I never could have written that, myself!" So it's flattering, but even more than that, it gives you another sense of your own writing. It broadens my view, you know?
