A lot of spells are cast in Latin and the goat is representative of the devil.  So while practicing Latin and making mistakes, the person inadvertently summoned the devil.

Okay. I'll take your word for it. 

But all I saw when I looked at that picture was a goat in a bedroom. Which just seemed silly to me. 

And then I thought to myself: "What has someone keeping a goat in their bedroom have to do with not being a very good student of Latin?"

There's a possibility I may have got the joke had the text read something like: "When you cast a spell and get it wrong." (Or "When you use the wrong word when casting a spell in Latin.")
