Ravings of a Rabid Werewolf - Poetry by Wolf - 32. Rain

Work must still be done

As the clouds weep their cold tears

Shoveling, cleaning

It is the price I must pay

For working in the warm sun

*****

Drops of water fall

Forming small streams on the ground

Relentless is rain

And yet each drop is special

As it soaks me to the bone

*****

They seek dry shelter

Finding warmth inside their stalls

But one won't listen

Whinnying for joy again

As I fall in the cold mud

*****

Winter's rain prepares

As brown hills turn a lush green

And sprouts spring from soil

I await the coming spring

As the super bloom grows near

These are each fine Tanka in their own, unique ways, but I have to say I love the final two. The "lush green" and "super bloom" are great ways to talk about that charged up new life just waiting for its day of sun.

The one with the horse laughing is priceless! So evocative, and yet under-currented with emotion too. Love it!

BTW, next month will start with a new version of the Lyric Poetry Prompt, so be sure to look for that :)

Thank you, AC :)  I've been enjoying the Lyric format, but I think Tanka is my favorite. The reference to the super bloom is since the deserts near me have gotten so much rain this winter, the wild flower blooms are expected to be incredible. As mad as I was getting at the horse for laughing, he decided it was playtime. After falling for the third time in the mud, he came over to nuzzle my face and apologize.

You wrote some great word pictures with these poems! All the rain makes me wonder if you have lived in western Washington (state)? I have, all my life, and although it isn't as rainy as some would like to believe, we know a thing or two about raindrops. 😏  Thanks for sharing more poems. Keep writing.

Thank you, Jeff. I lived in Bremerton, WA years ago. Where I"m at now doesn't get all that much rain, normally.
