Ravings of a Rabid Werewolf - Poetry by Wolf - 33. What is Normal

After reading a poem from a brilliantly gifted writer this morning, thoughts kept getting jotted down on my note pad today.

What makes someone normal?

Is it those who follow like clones,

Or try to fit a mold?

Maybe it is the unbroken.

Who really decides,

What is normal and who is not?

I happily embrace

Those the world says do not belong.

The broken ones like me,

Who fight their demons every day,

For a chance at a smile.

Medically and socially,

Emotionally too.

Mental health affects all of us.

They say to take your pills,

And it will make you feel normal,

Yet they never seem to.

But the new normal they now bring

Lets me face each new day

I will never be called normal,

Because in this strange world,

No one can ever be normal.

I'm not certain normal is all it's cracked up to be. Maybe it is like a Venn Diagram. If we are each a circle on the diagram, the parts of the circle that overlap become "normal." The part of the circle that does not overlap is the uniqueness in each of us. Normal has its place, but I like to celebrate uniqueness! Thanks for this interesting view of mental health.

@Mikiesboy @WolfM  I've been struggling all day to find a way to describe "normal".  It always came out like a scientific essay, so I gave up.  Thanks, Wolf, for doing a perfect job.  I'll only add my oft-repeated quote, "Why be normal when you can be yourself?"

i dislike the word "normal" so much so that i wrote a blog about it

normal is an artificial, societal construct

and nothing, i don't think, has ever caused so much pain for so many

thank you Wolfie for this wonderful poem about "normal"

This is a great poem, especially for those of us who are eccentric, unusual, or just plain unexpected. Normal. Such a mathematical word, and one which by definition cannot cover every person or occurrence.  We all need just enough conventionality for our own purposes. Thank you for saying far more gracefully than I ever could.

Thanks @Backwoods Boy  :)  Your quote was running around in my head while I was working on this. I just couldn't get it to fit with the syllable count.

Thank you, Molly   Your words perfectly describe it. For years I've had people ask, "Why can't you just be normal?" My boy says I wouldn't be as fun if I was just another normal clone.

To me "normal" equates to "conformist", something I have never been.  My different drummer and I will continue to March on, and to hell with those that dont approve.
