November CSR Discussion Day: Hustle by Talo Segura

    By Cia

Wow, November already. With the year almost over, I wanted to keep featuring things that kept readers guessing and challenge the idea of the traditional reading genres and stories. What did you think of Hustle? Share your thoughts below, but first, the interview!! Chocolate or Vanilla? I have to cheat... both! What's your favorite room in your home? Do you plot or write there? I don't have a favourite room and I write where ever I find myself alone and not being disturbed, of

All days are not alike.

In a few days, I shall find myself in the hospital for a range of unpleasant examinations. It seems that my cancer wakes up and my body has difficulty to resist its attacks.   This is the worst time because I should rather take care of my wife, whose health declines day by day. She needs me more and more and I'm afraid of not being able to take care of her. So we have to make other arrangements, calling for nursing staff coming home. Neither she nor I want to end up in a hospital. Our house is

Run.Hide.Fight. - How to Survive an Active Shooter Event

My grad school posted this video with tips about how to survive an active shooting event. I thought it was interesting and had some pretty good advice.     Hopefully none of us here will ever have to use this advice, but I'll try to keep this in the back of my mind as I go through my daily life.

One story ends and some ideas about the future

I really do enjoy writing realism into stories; I know it's not pure fiction and there's something interesting about reflecting on your life in a story. You guys can probably pick up various reasons why I am not a great boyfriend from reading my story, I freely admit it, too. I failed to read deeper into the romantic nature of my own relationship; perhaps, I don't know if it was a real relationship or a friendship that could never get launched. Perhaps, I was right in the beginning of it all; th

eBook review: In His Command by Rie Warren

We've been talking a lot about writing reviews, and not saying anything negative, but I think that honesty is still best when sharing thoughts on a story. I recently read an eBook I'd received in exchange for a review, so I didn't hold back on the truth as I saw it from my reader viewpoint.     In His Command by Rie Warren My rating: 3 of 5 stars   In His Command is a hard book for me to review. Post-apocalyptic fiction is on the rise and anti-homosexual views aren't exactly new in that sc

animals

animals   why do we as a nation love animals so much, is it because they offer us comfort and friendships, or they just make a house feel like home. the reason I love animals is they way I was brought up. I always had animals around me mostly cats and dogs with the occasional reptile and fish thrown in to the mix. I like the feeling you get when you can love something that can love you back be human or animals. due to my own experience I prefer small animals that I can pick up and play wit

Gay Refugee's

So find it really interesting that this has been a major point of the news of lately.   I have often said that Conservatives up in Canada are probably left of Democrats in the US. Not sure if the US is doing this or speaking out to this degree against Russia but if they are then good on them!   I never knew we took in 100 Gay Iranian refugees from Turkey either   I'll let you read and see what you think.   Canada accepting Gay Refugees

Hog Wild with Words!

Every once in a while it can be fun to go outside the box, away from the usual style, and go a bit wild with your words. Louis did an excellent article recently about weak writing and avoiding overused words and phrases. That stuck with me, as it is something I strive for as well. However, I just entered a contest on Kim Fielding's blog where the goal was to write a paragraph that her kids would find boring. I decided to do something ... different.   Stepping outside the box from my normal sty

Words I hate with a passion!

As an editor of fiction, (in South Africa there aren’t many), I have come across manuscripts that belong at the bottom of the slush pile, manuscripts with a literal value, manuscripts that are mediocre, entertaining, and some downright sloppy.   At times I value the plot, other times the characters, but, in the end, it doesn’t matter what I value, essentially the publisher has the last say. All I do is make sure that the manuscript is as perfect as it can be the moment it lands on the publishe

Just finished a story!

Finally! After two years of not writing a solo work; I dusted off an idea that was almost three years old and finished it into the very-loved work of Ice Fairy.   My plans for it right now are to offer it on Amazon as well and to find a great cover for it. I'm open to imagery suggestions.   If you love my work on that, I do invite you to read one of my oldest works (2010 but orig written in 2006) called For the Heart of Phillip. Available only here on GA for 99 cents. Any feedback on that

Well, I will be in Canada for a few days next week

I will be up in Canada next week. Toronto-Montreal area. It is kind of ironic as I am going and he's coming back, but will be interesting.   So as a forewarning Chapter 9-the end will be delayed in posting until next Saturday of Language of Love.   As for the story:   I know Chapter 7 touched on a foreign local hot button issues that most of you guys probably either don't care about or don't even realized existed. Dog meat consumption is a Chinese cultural problem; it's a complex issue, wh

Writing Minimally

An observation that I need to answer on my story's word length:   Yes, I know, my chapters are really short for Language of Love.   It's actually intentional. In the modern world, we don't write 10,000-20,000 to describe a day on our blogs or texts, at least for the average person. We shorten and compress it down to 1,000-2,000 words. I could easily make this story longer by adding more descriptions, color, and other facets of my culture or his culture. However, that's not the essence of mod

How to live like there's no tomorrow

How do you live life like there’s no tomorrow?   After watching the movie A Single Man yesterday, I had one question on my mind: How do you live like there’s no tomorrow? No matter what I thought, it didn't seem like the right answer. Or maybe it was right but only to a certain extent.   Like in this case: One day, you want to call your mom or a friend. But later you say, “Well, I’ll just call tomorrow.” If you want to live your life by this saying, then the correct thing to do would be to c

Freewriting

Well shock and horror the sheep is still around!   Yeah, I've been kinda absent of late, lots of stuff going on. Nothing noteworthy, just so many different little things taking up so much time.   Anyway, this blog entry is about my experiment today with freewriting. It's not something I do very often, but I enjoy it when I do.   For those who have never done any freewriting, it's actually quite easy. You simply write, without regard to spelling, grammar, subject matter, plot, or any of

Shanghai Grand

First, I was kind of worried that my story was too Chinese and might have been a little too "Cultural". It felt natural to write based on personal experience and things happening around me. It's a fun writing style and it allows me to write a lot faster and more naturally without worrying about technical terms or financial concepts. One reason why I am churning out a chapter a day.   As for some of the more controversial topics touched on, I know I pushed the envelope a bit. In Chapter 3, I ma

After reading this week's Wacky Wednesday ...

I noticed someone had commented on leaving reviews. I've been on both sides of this, reading them and leaving them. I just figured I would note a few things.   1) I love a review. It is nice to know what what people think of the ideas I have in my head. I have had great reviews and bad ones.   2) Bad reviews - I have no problem if someone doesn't like my story. However saying "You suck as a writer," or "Why did you write such crap," really doesn't tell me much, other than feeling it is a per

How the TV-show Young Americans Broke Down the Gender Binary

I got a bit of a memory jog when people started talking about The O.C. the other day, because of the show's 10th anniversary. When that show came out, I was already a little done with the high school drama genre, and was moving on to anime, sci-fi, fantasy and horror themed tv-series. I used to watch Popular pretty regularly, and I even had time to, for a season or so, really like Dawson's Creek, though I was young at the time. But there was one high school drama type of series that stood out, a

Subtlety in dialogue

I run across dialogue in which people say what they mean and mean what they say. For instance, two characters who sit and talk about their vulnerable circumstances without any hint of obfuscation. They have a heart to heart straight to the bone talk. Or the dialogue in which two characters engage in passionate duel over their beliefs without a hint of subtlety either.   I understand some readers derive some vicarious pleasure or emotions in these scenes, but really to me, they mostly feel syru

writers block help me !

Writers block a crime of the mind! Discovering a cure   The other day I was writing, one minute words were flowing from my head the next minute a concrete wall had been built and all the words disappeared. I was a victim of writers block any journalist, authors or writers worst enemy. So I thought to myself is there a cure for writers block, and in spent a good two or three hours searching, browsing and finding nothing. I was disappointed so I gave up in the end saved my story and closed the

My brain is finally letting me write again

As a young child, I was an avid reader and a book hoarder. By the time I was nine, I'd already accumulated over 800 books and counting. My mother allowed me to read whenever and whatever I wanted, which was the best thing she could've done for me growing up. Though my 6th grade teacher had a problem with my reading, "The Color Purple" during class, I continued to read on.   I read so much, I decided I wanted to become a writer, one of the many professions I wanted to do growing up in the 80s a
