November CSR Discussion Day: Hustle by Talo Segura

    By Cia

Wow, November already. With the year almost over, I wanted to keep featuring things that kept readers guessing and challenge the idea of the traditional reading genres and stories. What did you think of Hustle? Share your thoughts below, but first, the interview!! Chocolate or Vanilla? I have to cheat... both! What's your favorite room in your home? Do you plot or write there? I don't have a favourite room and I write where ever I find myself alone and not being disturbed, of

Endings, Beginnings, Friends, and Weddings

Life always seems to go in cycles. There are ups and downs, good times and bad times. I think we all go through them.   My father went out to see my brother for eleven days. It was nice to have peace and quiet. While he was gone I probably did more than I should have. Today, knowing he was due home I went full out like I haven't since I hurt my back. At least the house is clean and he came home to a clean bed, fresh blankets, and no problems. As a result of the non-stop movement all day, my ba

Why Blacks Won't Push LGBT Equality Across The Finish Line

An article published on gay.net asked the question? “Will African-Americans Push LGBT Equality Across the Finish Line?” The answer is a big, bold, NO! President Obama has the task of cleaning up the mess left by President Bush who ruined our great nation and leaving it in shambles. Unemployment was at an all-time high, banks were going bankrupt, the economy was shot to s**t!, the Stock Market crashed with countless number of people losing everything they had, the auto industry was crashing at

A Gay Separatist....

I noticed I am on my way to become a gay separatist... (kind of like radical lesbian feminist separatist, except I am not vocal about it and I am not a woman). I don't know why and I don't think it's healthy. This is especially weird because the world is becoming more gay tolerant (than when I grow up).   I wonder if it's because I am getting older and just want to get a BF and hopefully a committed marriage (sorry I am so skeptical nowadays, I have to put that qualifier in), and forget about

Political Battle Rages on in Texas Over HIV/AIDS Drugs for Low Income Patients

inShare0   Dallas County Health officials are pleading and begging with the state NOT to cut funding for HIV medications. Why? Because there's an epidemic of HIV/AIDS in Texas that places the State at number 4. The Senate subcommittee on Medicaid is recommending elimination of funding for HIV drugs for low income patients, some 14 thousand statewide. Zach Thompson is director of Dallas County Health and Human Services. Thompson says his department serves more than 1800 HIV/AIDS patients

Epidemic in the School Yard!

The HIV/AIDS epidemic is now in the playgrounds of schools throughout the nation, and is becoming a horror to parents who find out that their child is one of the statisics in the epidemic. In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, condoms are being given to 11 year olds in lieu of Barbie's for girls, and Tonka Toys for boys.   Philly has the highest number of sexually active teens, and one of the lowest number for those using a protection. Philadelphians are being infected at a rate more than 50 percent

Stephanie Danielson's For the Heart of Phillip

After having read Stephanie's heartwarming novel about three men consistently intertwined in each other's lives, I paused to consider what I should say in the review. It took just on six hours to read the book. It could have taken four or maybe five hours without interruptions.   To say that I was swept away by emotion would be an understatement. To say that Stephanie's characters engaged me in a three dimensional sense would be an understatement. I was transported into Phillip's world and

Hannibal Review and a real life story that scares me

I was bored today and wanted to catch up on TV that I missed last year, which turns out to be a lot better than I thought. The show of choice was: Hannibal, based of Silence of the Lamb and Red Dragon character Hannibal Lecter.   I was not originally interested, but I read the reviews and tried it out. It was incredibly interesting, disturbing, and psychologically educational, like watching a progressive drama about the root of sanity and insanity in the modern world. Sure, the guy eats people

Putin and Obama in a cockfight

Ok, while I strenuously object to any US-led military action in Syria ***you only need to look at the clusterfuck of Egypt , Libya, Mali to see why*** I find Putin's op-ed in the NY times highly ironic, given Russia's a country that's very backward on gay rights, backward on free speech rights, and, consider the fact that Putin wouldn't so much as allow dissenters a full page spread in the Pravda.   Oh look, a museum in Moscow was raided by the police for its 'political art' for depicting Ob

eBook Review: Scorpion by Aleksandr Voinov

Scorpion by Aleksandr Voinov My rating: 4 of 5 stars   I'm not a big fan of historical work, but sometimes I can't help but pick up one that sounds sooo good. Scorpion lived up to my expectations too! There were many elements of this story that made it read more like a fantasy than a historical book, likely because the time was set so far into the past.   The contrast of the gritty soldier's POV to the far reaching and political landscape that made up the plot was refreshing. A simple perso

What are American Values?

One political blog posts for old times sake   As I am writing a story exploring the Far East and Asian cultures, basically going to my roots, I am hit with an odd conundrum from the other side.   Everyone, Republican and Democrat, is using terms like "Exceptional" and "American Values", sounds interesting on a sound bite, but I don't really get it. The American people are deeply divided right now over a million issues, there really is no clear "American Value" that can be described as "Exce

Really Awesome Writing - a kind of review

So, I make no secret of the fact that Mark Arbour's writing is what brought me here to GA. I started by reading the (as yet unfinished) "On the Mark" which as a matter of fact I still rate as one of Mark's better works. But then I moved on to Mark's "Nessun Dorma"... the series "Chronicles of an Academic Predator". It is by far the highest quality of writing that I have read on this site. When you consider how many other awesome authors we have here - you realise that being the creme de la creme

Birthday!

So - I started trying to put some of this in today's News Blog, but it got to be too much info, so splitting off the more personal aspect which involves my birthday this past Saturday.   As I said there, birthdays are definitely a time for introspection. I'm now 48 - four full turns on the chinese zodiac (or 4/5ths of one if you count the elemental aspect too).   This past year has caused an inordinate amount of introspection - with so many changes, many at times overwhelming. I long for a

University of Delaware students rampage for "I'm Schmacked"

University of Delaware students rampage for "I'm Schmacked"   Well, it could have been worse. It could have been like Penn State, who threw a hissy tantrum riot because Joe Paterno was fired for allowing Jerry Sandusky to live outside of prison walls for another 13 years and molest even more boys. Check out the party footage here:     It's funny to watch this, considering that I've walked over that pedestrian bridge umpteen times. I also think it's hilarious because University of

Let this party start

I feel very adamant about my situation. Yes, I'm a struggling alcoholic, and yes I feel guilty, but this I do know; I'm getting stronger each and every day. I have a support system, a loving partner that yells at me when I fail, but in a good way. She lets me know that I promised not to do so, that it makes her sad when I don't hold onto my promises. But it's getting easier to say no to the bottle, I assure you of this. I feel stronger knowing that while I share my struggle, I become stronger. I

How we treat dogs

The other week I posted a pic of a dog, clipped to make it seem like it was wearing a certain type of garment.   Someone posted in reply that it was "the cruelest hoax ever perpetrated on a dog".   Well, it wasn't a hoax - it was real.   And it wasn't cruel. Looking at the pic it's clear the "trim" was professionally done - just like this poodle     There's no evidence that the dog whose pic I posted was caused any discomfort, let alone pain. And in time the dog's hair would grow back

Will wait for Anthology to settle before launching new story

Okay, I will wait, because I want to separate the new story I am working on from anthology authors/readers, giving both breathing room.   This is the Modern Eastern Fantasy/Sci-Fi novel, which incorporates myths and legends of Asia, exploring Taoism, Buddhism, Jainism, Hinduism, Tengriism, Zoroastrianism, and several other Asian religious/philosophical ideologies with a modern scientific twist.   Within a week or two, I will officially ask for Betas and an Editor. If you guys want to work wi

eBook Review: Second Hand by Cullinan and Sexton

Second Hand by Heidi Cullinan My rating: 4 of 5 stars   Okay, I picked up Second Hand simply because I love this series from Tucker Springs. Of course I’d read several of the later books so I know the pairing would work out, but I enjoyed the story nonetheless. It was nice to get the backstory I’d missed since I started off with Dirty Laundry, book 3 in the Tucker Springs world.   I’m a big fan of Heidi Cullinan and Marie Sexton. I like both of their work singly, and they mesh together quit

Going from Man of Science to Man of Art

It's kind of weird really. I don't know how/why the transition happened, but to me it's like ancient history, because it's so fussy at this point. I recently dig up a story I wrote for an adventure game project (never completed, btw), and it was written in programming language style syntax.... Lots of conditionals and definition declarations. Wow, Ashi was a nerd!!! I mean a full-fledge nerd, not like the half-nerd I am now....   And then I found this story, which is probably the first st

Random Stream of Consciousness

People are afraid to merge on freeways in Los Angeles. This is the first thing I hear when I come back to the city.   And that was how Brett Easton Ellis started his debut novel, Less Than Zero. Bumblebee's recent status update sort of reminds me how a fussy past sometimes can come back at the most inconvenient time. Some of you guys know I am a photographer, so I have a huge amount of photographs in my hard drive, many photos go way back to a time I don't want to remember. And today, whi
