don't let the canadian lovers here me say this but we all went naked at least once in the shower in high school in grade 10, me everytime pretty much lol, i even jacked off while the two hottest GUYS ever were in the shower, and i was on the other side of the wall, so i didn't see them, they didn't see me. Untill they came out of the shower but then i was done and they were clueless as to what i just did haha!!

Gym Class gah! I am so Bella Swan and Clumsy.. My Cousin told all the guys in my gym class that i was a prostitute so i'd have guys offer me money for stuff.. I so switched gym classes FAST! and beat the crap outta my cousin for that . Didn't help at that it's small towns and everyone at the time thought i was queer cuz i beat up a gay kid and pretended to be Bi Sexual to get outta Expellsion So locker rooms pretty much were change and leave as fast as possible lmao..

I think the focus was more on showering as quick as possible to have enough time to do the hair/make-up thing, but honestly after the first class in 7th grade it was no big deal. There were times I enjoyed the view, but all in all, nudity was no big deal. Good thing, the average gym towel was only the size of a hand towel where I went to school, lol.

I wonder if public indecency laws have anything to do with it. Personally, I wouldn't reveal the family jewels for that reason.

Obviously I need something more constructive to do; however, since I go to the gym every day for physical therapy, I'm in a good position to do research. Fewer and fewer guys walk from the locker to the showers without a towel wrapped around them. (Same towel they're going to use to dry after the shower...not a pleasant thought.) More and more are drying while in the shower stall (cramped!) and then wrapping that wet towel around themselves to walk back to the lockers. I've already suggested the reason for the prudery: the virulent hatred of homosexuality by a vocal minority leading to a fear of being thought to be "tainted."

Where does it come from?

 

1. Body shame. Boys and younger men today are ashamed of their bodies, sometimes because of their looks or build, sometimes just because they don't think they live up to an imaginary ideal standard. This hit its peak in the 90's with clothes that are so baggy you can't tell ANYTHING about the person wearing them. And now, skinny jeans, which look good on about 1% of the people that wear them, are exaggerating that ideal even further.

 

A corollary to this is helicopter parenting to prevent "discomfort" for Junior. I told my parents I didn't want to take showers in gym (in 1976 or something) and I basically got told to grow a pair (I was working on it but a really late bloomer) and ignore anyone who bugged me. End of discussion. I took showers.

 

Two days ago, my sister got into a big tizzy with her kids school, because her daughter didn't want to swim, she's "heavy" and doesn't want to wear a suit. She got excused from gym. Not just swimming, but all gym for the rest of the year. Which of course, is not the answer for a kid that's not physically fit to begin with.

 

2. Modern media imposing fear of pedophilia/rape/molestation on kids, so much so that the mere idea of an older person (and I'm not talking about "creepy old man" like me) looking at a younger person - for whatever reason - is considered a threat. Better hide your junk or someone might jump you...

 

3. The perception that boys getting undressed in front of each other might suddenly flip orientations and start kissing passionately..oh, wait, sorry, that's just my imagination.

 

4. The consistent swing to the right - morally, I mean - that the country has been taking for the last 20 years. We're becoming prudes because of a religious drive to move the country back to "family values" - homo is wrong, gay marriage is wrong, etc. - and being naked in the company of others is somehow wrong, as well.

I only had PE in the eighth eight. I have posted about that. In college being nude in the locker room and showering in the open didn't phase me. I had grown out of the awkward stage. What did bother me was I had my clothes stolen. Twice. Now that was not funny for me. But everyone else disagreed.

I realized that I was gay in Junior High when we had to take showers in PE Class. It seems like size has always been in the forefront of importance. Is it long enough? Is it thick enough? How am I compared to other guys? I know I am not that endowed, and feel like I would be pointed out and laughed at behind my back.

Getting naked seems to be so difficult for so many. When I was young, I was proud of my body and had no problem hanging out at the nude beach or getting naked at the gym. Now, I'm just an old fart; however, my remains are not TOTALLY horrifying. Being a health club manager helped keep me in shape but no matter how diligent one is about diet and exercise, age will show on a body, that's just the way the world works.

 

The older I've gotten, the less I care what the other guys think. The 8-pack abs are gone and the pecks have deflated, but my self-confidence has increased to compensate I guess.

 

I wish more guys were comfortable with nudity. It's a shame really, we're all just people.

After my PE class in highschool, we had about 5mins to get changed and run to our next class........

 

so no showers, since there was no room with about 100 girls trying to get changed at the same time in a classroom sized change room/toilets

 

and the whole change room sige of our gym smelled like this disgusting smell of different deodorants

 

plus if you were talking to someone in the change rooms and you looked at anywhere but their face, you would probably get jumped and LGBT bashed by a bunch of half naked girls..... not so bad really

 

i dont know what happened in the boys change rooms, but in the girls change room no one EVER got down past their bra and undies, normally just to a bra and and put the skirt on over the gym shorts, though the no showers thing was kinda gross in the summer when we were doing athletics and it got over 42C

Heh, my how times have changed. In Tulsa, Oklahoma, back in 1968, PE was required for all students grades 7-12 (ages 11-17/18, depending on your birth date). In every school I went to, showers were REQUIRED, period. At the time I guess no one thought about showering in swim speedos. In fact, I'm not even sure speedos existed then.

 

I guess the pure shock, happening at age 11, of having any modicum of modesty ripped from you in an instant gave rise to the attitude of "just get used to it."

 

However, woe unto any poor sap who popped a woody in gym shower though. OH! Except for a 'star' football, basketball etc., player poppin one. Then he was just razzed in a friendly way, and if well-endowed, maybe even admired.

 

Of course, when I was eleven, I had no clue why I was prayin not to get a woody in gym showers. It was many years later when I accepted my sexuality.

Before junior high school when I was doing Y Camp (ages 9-12) I learned from older boys who dropped everything to change from field clothes to swimming suits that nudity was no big deal, so it wasn't to me. Starting when I was in junior high (7th grade) showering was mandatory after P.E., it was considered part of good health education and so in high school no one was bothered by showering.

 

But at some point I've noticed guys (teens) getting shyer and shyer all the time, not changing or showering at the gym. How you can lift, do aerobics or basketball and then climb into your car to go home sweating like a pig is beyond my comprehension. From friends who teach, I know they have dropped mandatory showering in middle schools and high schools, mostly due to lawsuits, and seem to be creating this new prudishness or shyness in young guys that I don't get.

 

But then again, I've never been able to relate to all the gay stories where the gay character can't shower because he'd 'pop a bone' in the showers if he did. I knew from early on that I liked looking at naked guys and knew I was curious about doing stuff with guys, but never even came close to an erection even in the midst of my hormonal years. It wasn't that hard to control Mr. Happy.
