Found him in my European history books,....It's bloody Churchill :P (John Churchill, ancestor to Winston Churchill)

Famed British statesman, general, and overall power broker for 5 British rulers during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He was made Duke of Marlborough (not the smoking brand)

I remember him and the picture as I have an edition of Winston Churchill's biography on his ancestor with a few pictures.

Wow, that's a four volume set - 1m words. Nice bedtime reading :P

And, yes, you're correct :)

This guy had an important role in changing British history in his lifetime, and again over 200 years later  - without a TARDIS :P He betrayed a King - James II - and his treasonous actions resulted in the king fleeing abroad and being replaced by a Dutch King, William of Orange which led Britain to war against the French under the tyrannical Louis XIV who was busy conquering Europe. He was a brilliant military commander and his leadership effectively ended Louis' plans to dominate Europe. A grateful country paid him £250,000 to build a swanky new home

Not bad for someone who started off as a page boy and got caught in flagrante with the King's favourite mistress.

Two hundred and thirty years later his descendant, Winston Churchill was a largely forgotten politician earning his living as a writer, who researched and wrote the biography of his ancestor, using the threat that French military expansion posed then as a parallel for the threat from Nazi Germany which no-one in Britain wanted to believe. Published in the early 1930s the biography was very influential in changing opinion about Germany and, equally important, about Churchill not being a washed up has been but someone who was relevant and needed.

Your turn :)

Nope, but he was a polish refugee and is famed for a "discovery" that Arthur c. Clarke thought was one of the most important in human history.

Benoit Mandelbrot :P

For those of us who used to tax our CPU making fractal images, he is the man who came up with the term fractal and is considered the father of fractal geometry.

Although he looks like he could be David Letterman's father. :D

The photo I posted is of Brian Greene, a theoretical physicist and author.  Since no one seemed to know him, we should just move on to someone else.  How about you hh5?  Why don't you pick the next photo?

The very same, the legendary Russian ballet dancer Vaslav Nijinsky, gay lover of Diaghilev until his marriage, when Diaghilev threw him out of the Ballets Russes in a fit of jealous pique. The tennis racket pose was intended to put players off the scent but your beady eyes spotted the ballet shoes - well done :)

Looks like there are a lot of cops, it's obviously a famous couple and case. The guy looks familiar to me and the first word that came into my head was that he's a Nazi ( :P not even joking, the rumor has been around for 80 years that he was sympathetic to Germany).

Ann and Charles Lindbergh Sr.

My bet is this picture was taken after their baby, Charles Lindbergh jr., was kidnapped and it became the first big case for the newly formed FBI.

You are fast, WL.  It is Charles Lindberg and Ann Morrow Lindberg leaving a church in Washington, DC.  The exact date of the photo is not known, but probably was in the late 1920s.  The kidnapping was March 1, 1932.  Lindberg's famous trans-Atlantic flight was May 20–21, 1927.  He had police escorts everywhere he went for many years after that.

Now, it's your turn to challenge us.
