Used the first of our frozen garlic yesterday. Wow, it was so easy to peel and mash up, i may just freeze it all the time. We have a LOT of frozen garlic. I ordered one head of garlic from Wally World Groceries and they sent 16. Michael and i spent a little time in the kitchen that day, breaking them up into 2 to 4 clove pieces and freezing them but it was really easy to use it straight out of the freezer.

Just sharing in case you decide you need to buy 16 heads of garlic.  :)  🧄

I'm 1/2 Italian (from my mother's side), so that isn't out of the realm of possibilities.  My father who was Irish used to tell his MIL "More garlic Ma, more garlic" when she was making meatballs and sauce.  So I got it bad from both sides of the aisle.

Excuse me Good Sirs and DiC friends.

Just wanted to stop in and say ‘Hi’

The last week and 1/2 has been rough dealing with a health challenge.

things are improving i have surgery coming up (left shoulder sling 4-6 weeks) we tried PT but it didn’t help. Surgery is the only solution.

taking it easy.

so take care of yourselves.

I can't go overboard on the food prep this weekend like I normally do. I don’t like leaving a lot in the freezer when we go away. I have a friend who learned that the hard way.

Hope everyone has a good day!

here is a trick we used get a small bowl and fill with ice put a coin on top of the ice if when you get back and the coin is frozen in the water you know you had a power outage.

I've done that before. It's a great way to know about an outage when you've been gone for a few days. The biggest problem is not knowing how long the power will be out. When Irma came through we were gone for three days,  came back and were still without power for another three days. Some people I knew had no power for over a week. I'm hoping we dodge the storms this year again.

I'll stay out of the food discussions. While I *can* cook, actually I'm a pretty good old style (lots of butter) French chef when I want to be, it's just too time consuming. My boyfriend isn't into cooking although he loves to eat. Heavy foods though aren't really his thing.

Also the clean up from cooking is too much. I have to have every ingredient in a dish before I start to cook.

Just wanted to give a quick update on the how places are reopening in MD. Full occupancy, people who have been vaccinated don't have to wear a mask except in one county that still requires it. At the poker room they have removed all the plexiglass dividers from the tables and gone from 7 people per table to 8. Before the pandemic it was 9 per table, not sure if they will go back to that or not because people tend to like the 8 players better.

At the casino this morning I'd say it was about 60-40 people still wearing masks, including me. I would feel okay without the mask, I think. Until I do it I'm not sure.

What's going on in your area of the US or world?

We were powerless 13 days after Sandy.

If you pack the bowl of ice tightly and with chips around the cubes you can get a rough idea of how long it was out. I ran a few experiments after sandy, figuring most of the food was a goner anyway. I used a tall iced tea glass. Ice held fine for 24 hours, coin was still at almost the top at 36. By 48 it was melted enough to sink past the remaining ice to the bottom, but there was some cube shape left.

Okay, what part of "load the horses at 7" is ambiguous?

I calculate load time based on how hard some horses are to get into the trailer, distance we need to travel, the earliest horse to hit the show ring, lead time to dress horse and rider, plus a fudge factor to cover unplanned for issues.

Load at 7 does NOT mean arrive at the barn 6:55 and start feeding and turnout.

It's now 6:45, the client is nowhere to be seen and the 8 horses on this side of the barn are all staring at me with the "I'm starting, why are you not feeding me" face

Nope. Is a semi regular client from the other side of town. She calls me when she has more girls showing than her 2 horse trailer can carry.

Then you're just going to have to use "rude people" time. I tell those kind of folks to be there 1-1 1/2 hours earlier that I want them to be there. If you can't quit them, you have to out fox them. 🤣

7:30 and the first pieces of tack have finally been loaded. I am just the driver, so I am sitting here with my morning caffeine watching the antics. I did warn the trainer that every minute they waste here reduces prep time at the show.

One mom, a new horse owner, d I d try to give me detailed instructions on how to load her horse. I suggested she load him herself. Her answer? I've never done it before.

The same part that's related to its cousin "What part of 'no' don't you understand, the N or the O?"

I still have my second cup of morning coffee. Thanks to the birds, I could have gotten up at 5:30 but I pushed through their choir practice and got a few more hours.

my dear DiC family,

i'm sitting here tonight with some celebratory hot wings, and an adult beverage.
Phil and i saw his retinal specialist today. you'll remember in March the news wasn't good. on April 7 He had an injection in the left eye. today's appointment was set to do a scan of both eyes and see if the swelling, etc. had stabilized.
i am happy to report that His eyes are "stable to mild improvement." He'll go again in 3 months for another scan.
all in all, a VERY good day.
so many of you have been on this journey with us, i wanted to let you know the good news.

know the symptoms of diabetes, it could save your life, your eyesight, or that of someone you love

molly this is wonderful news. so glad things are going good.

Jicama saga..... (sounds better if pronounced hee-camma saga 😆)

I bought three good sized ones at the farmer's market yesterday. Resorted to the electric knife to get the skin off. Two of the three were brown and sort of mushy. Googled it. Not good. *sigh*

The third one was OK inside but not big enough to try to make taco shells with, soooooo..... I cut them into something resembling steak fries, tossed them with some lemon/lime juice, sprinkled with chili powder and then cooked them on the griddle until they were a little soft.

I liked them raw, but I liked the texture better when they were cooked and then cooled off.

So dinner tonight will be regular whole wheat soft tacos and I sautéed a bag of slaw mix (red/green cabbage & carrots) radishes and bean sprouts. Made a citrus Greek yogurt dressing and younger son is thawing out chicken to go with his.

So will I be getting jicama again? Yes. Now to figure out how to tell if they're not brown inside...🤔

I got a lot done today. Bedding all washed, roasted another batch of veggies, cleaned the floors and gave Camden a bath. Son needs to be at work for 5 and then it will be time to kick back with a little whiskey and chill. Stick a fork in me...done!

There’s more searches for bad or brown jicama, but I found this for knowing if it’s good.

When buying jicama, choose those that are firm, with smooth skin that's not cracked or bruised. It should look fresh, not dry or shriveled. Make sure there are no soft or wet spots on the jicama skin. Although jicama can be eaten at any stage of growth, the smaller ones have a sweeter, more appealing flavor.

i'm so sorry, that sounds nasty! i've never thought to grill them ... but sounds good! you had a busy day! i did bed linens last week, i usually do them every week but lately it's every other week. i have 5 refrigerator oatmeals with chia seeds, vanilla, cinnamon & golden raisins prepped. two with milk already in the fridge. dinner will be ready to go soon. just some oven baked chicken thighs with some leeks & green beans from the farmers market
