Disasters, Delights and Other Detours - 97. Diverted and Invitation

Two sonnets to start September. You may find it useful to read them aloud. I can't find any record of my having posted these before, but if you've seen them already, I do apologize.

Diverted

I'm greeted in the morning by the sight:

a dull reflection mimics every move;

there is no picture there, nor image bright,

and now I see how hard today will prove.

Each day is different, yet this simple glance

can change the course of living in a trice

from bleak despair to such a happy dance,

depending whether what I see is nice.

This glass upon the world I call my own

will never heal it's cracked and silvered skin,

unlike a muscle torn, or fractured bone,

beyond the help of medic, witch or jinn.

The unresponsive phone, a lump of clay,

compels me yet to write another day.

Invitation

Now come away with me an afternoon,

to spend in sweet amusement or in jest,

and not until our play shall send us rest

may we be found at ease, entangled, strewn.

For here the moment seems most opportune

to gladly fall in line with your request,

and bid you enter as my welcome guest,

as we in happy contest might commune.

Alas, we know the sun its route must trace;

I beg you join me with my utmost art

ere we rejoin the thousands of our race,

and all too soon, regretful do we part,

so grant me now this one enchanting grace:

the chance to win a portion of your heart.

Invitation is intimate...very intimate... and lovely... and there was a time when I would let my mirror affect my day. Alas, I seldom glance anymore. These really made me think today, so I came back to them a second time. Great poetry, Parker. Cheers!

I’m very happy you came back again to these. You’re quite right about Invitation. It seemed like a perfect late afternoon/late summer sonnet. The phone is the worst mirror; it’s neither always true, nor reliable. I wish I could throw mine away sometimes. Thank you very much for your comments!

These are both lovely and should be read aloud, slowly, like savouring a perfect wine.

i've not read these before, these i would remember.

I love that you used the word savoured. Sometimes, reading a poem aloud brings out flavors and textures in words that I’d miss in silent reading. Hugs and thanks for reading these, and for your encouragement.

I enjoyed both of these. And I have not seen either before.

I've never considered how much the mirror has to say in the morning. But it certainly can convey the mood of the day ahead. The phone - a regular liar. I've never let mine have any say in anything!

The invitation to play in the second verse sounds joyful. What a nice way to spend an afternoon! Even if a daydream, for now?

Thank you! 🙂

The phone is a liar and a tease. It’s no real friend. I’d much rather spend my afternoon with my friend in person. Someday it may be possible to do this more easily, and without apprehension. Thanks very much for reading these, and for your thoughts.
