Disasters, Delights and Other Detours - 6. Occam's Razor and Doppler Effect
Occam's Razor
Will Occam had a razor keen,
the like to which has ne'er been seen,
though Aristotle came quite close,
as logic seemed to him routine.
It's not a razor (I'm jocose),
but Occam's rule for all verbose
explanatory theorems states:
eschew the over-grandiose.
Instead, in rational debates,
if two ideas have equal weights,
the one with least assumptions wins
the day o'er other postulates.
My heart is burst, my head, it spins;
the simplest reason for my grins
is love surprising, unforeseen
yet here our life as one begins.
Doppler Effect
Herr Christian Doppler had a flash
of intuition bold and rash
that waves' inconstancies reflect
an object's movement on the dash.
The famed eponymous effect
of wave compression with respect
to sounding items drawing near
explains the tones our ears detect.
Wave elongation will appear
with parting bodies, to your ear
they sing their songs in lower keys,
like sirens, which we overhear.
My heart proves Doppler by degrees,
it races at your gentle squeeze
but as you leave, its rate will crash,
upholding his hypotheses.
