Disasters, Delights and Other Detours - 14. A Sonnet at Solstice
Now comes the deepest darkness of the year,
when Selene reigns longest, chill and cold;
the stars forget to tread their dance of old,
and sunlight is reluctant to appear.
Behold the whited snowscape, most austere,
the subtle covered over with the bold,
as late the autumn colors once foretold,
dark blackness coming earlier and near.
So here before a merry crackling flame
may we the longest evening spend at play;
in mirth and friendship let us now reclaim
the light and joy of life as it were day,
and every frigid shadow shall we tame,
as joined in heart, we drive the frost away.
