Disasters, Delights and Other Detours - 61. December Sketches and Solsitice Evening

An offering to everyone for Solstice, for Christmas, or just because. Some of you may have seen bits of these before.

December Sketches

I greet you

from the cool autumn night

where contrabass owls tune their voices

on their high oaken chairs in the shadowed forest,

and low clouds reflecting village lights

speed you my love on the

rising wind.

Down, down, down

through winter’s deep darkness,

the cold moonlit stillness settles sharp

over silver shadowed meadow, farm and forest,

its chill seeping into those who lie

under blankets too thin

for slumber.

All those bright

holiday cards I write

to branches of my family tree

and to those friends with whom I raced across youth’s fields

find their way over plains and oceans

to repeat joy shared and

remembered.

Solstice Evening

Twitch-tail grey squirrels

scamper skyward up the oak

to mate in the clouds.

The old weathervane

sits silent in the chill night

keenly listening

to us groan on our hinges

if we should change direction.

Wild boy,

sleep beside me

in your exhausted state,

because your every graceful move

repaid

my own

reciprocal invitation,

enough to tame heaven

and leave my frame

at peace.

You lie with brow relaxed, eyes closed in sleep,

curled in moon-shadowed contrast

to the chaotic sheets.

Wake with me

to end this longest night

as sun tinted skies dance on the ridge;

with languid kiss and sweet caress drive far away

all thought of winter’s dark dominion

and in the growing light

let us bloom.

I wish you joy, and peace and love in the New Year.

These dance on feet both quick and slow, then tiptoe as quiet as mice before swirling away in blissful steps. I marvel sir at your skill. Thank you for this gift you share. May have a Joyous and Merry Christmas and a Blessed and Happy New Year.

You’re most generous in your kind words on these small offerings. Thank you for reading them and responding to them. And my you also find joy and blessings in the New Year.

As I've noted before, night, darkness, and the world at sleep are such wonderful themes for your poetry. With this in mind, you'll understand why number 2 speaks to me. And do I spot some more kimos?  ;)  You make these snapshots a signature of yours. Thank you for your Christmas gifts.  💖

You did indeed spot another Kimo, in addition to several other short counted forms. Winter night and its subtle shadows seem to lend themselves to poetry it seems. But maybe that’s because I’m often awake then to observe. Thank you so much for reading and responding to these small offerings.
