Disasters, Delights and Other Detours - 32. Three Autumn Offerings
At First Light
Sweet love, awake,
and with the dawn my breathing bless;
assuage that ache
that clamors in my deep distress
to echo in my emptiness.
Here I confess
upon your lips and sleep hazed brow
amor’s address;
to Cupid’s arrows will I bow
if only you embrace me now.
Hear me avow
my place is at your side indeed,
no matter how
the unkind years may intercede
or where the road ahead may lead.
For I am freed
by joy that never shall forsake,
nor e’er concede
to storms that might our windows shake;
your smiles my very soul unmake.
Louis
Laugh, sun-splashed boy,
who would a kingdom’s rule embrace,
but now employ
your lively wit and supple grace
as round a shadowed chateau race
in merry chase
past tapestries, down paneled hall,
through common space
to royal rooms’ brocaded wall,
where golden beams on satin fall.
There may you crawl
‘neath covers of the finest thread
in pleasure’s thrall
and with your backstairs playmate tread
the dance of lovers in that bed.
No tears now shed
for lives that statecraft must destroy,
all fealty dead,
when friends a monarch might annoy,
reminding him of youthful joy.
For Friendship
A friend and I walked down a trail;
in forest twilight told my tale,
and he was kind to hear me out
so sanity might then prevail.
I told him things I dare not shout,
and felt much lighter, though I’m stout,
his words were tonic, balm and grace,
deserving deepest thanks devout.
In those dark woods our steps we trace
as truth and self-reproach I face;
no resolution did I reach,
but still as brothers we embrace.
Much more than all the math I teach,
I prize the wisdom he might preach
until the stars begin to pale
amongst the cottonwood and beech.
perhaps a plaint, or pique or peeve,
whatever thing you write, I swear,
I shall enjoy what you leave there.
