Disasters, Delights and Other Detours - 89. Anthems for Pride

Completed in May and June; as usual, any errors you may find are my very own.

Once again

they cancelled the parade;

there was no need to make the journey

and meet friends at predetermined vantage points;

instead, I donned my rainbow striped shirt

and waved at cars passing

down the road.

~~~ * ~~~
Is there within the human frame
some enmity in-built
to ambiguity which came
with Adam decked in guilt?
Why beg for black and white
when all the garden seems aglow
with every color of the ‘bow
that shines beneath the light?
So furious do moderns rail
at polysemous man;
rejected, quite beyond the pale,
for straying from the plan
so fervently compelled
by generations long grown cold,
their photographs now cracked and old,
yet thoughtlessly upheld.
For what in earth or heav’n above
surpasses in its scope
abundant, many-colored love
which shines with radiant hope
on all who breathe the air
and sing whatever song their soul
was giv’n at birth to make them whole,
the darkness to repair.
~~~ * ~~~

Bright hued flags

are flying proud today,

and floating on the fair wind of hope

that storm clouds of bigotry and hate are dispersed,

with the certainty of growing strength

to weather the hazards

if they’re not.

Thank you for reading this small offering for Pride this year. My thanks go to @AC Benus for help making these better and clearer. Any thoughts or responses you may have are welcome.

THIS! Absolutely soul stirring. One of my favorite verses ever, and those two lines... beautiful...  HAPPY PRIDE, Parker

You’re very kind to say so. I’m really happy you found those lines stirring. They must’ve been waiting at the tip of my pen, because they flowed out so quickly. Thanks a million for reading, and for your thoughts.

Gave me goosebumps. Lovely work, full of revolutionary spirit and hope.

Thank you for reading these. The middle poem was inspired by a poetic form in which Herman Melville wrote. You were very kind to comment.

It does my heart good to see the warm reception these poems receive :) You've done great work, and you know, I might have seen you out on the road in your rainbow vest ;)

Your encouragement for so long has been wonderful. Thank you for your help in honing these. I think I might get a rainbow biking shirt for next year…
