Disasters, Delights and Other Detours - 2. Early Morning

Impressions from recent walks in the predawn hours.

Road Music

Highway
noises echo
down dark morning's valley,
braking eighteen wheelers sing of
lost things;
harried,
sleepy-eyed, coffee starved pickups
play high C's on concrete,
but can't drown out
the stars.

Dawn Encounter

Standing
tense in the mist,
the tall buck tests the air,
waiting for the blood-red scent of
danger;
subtle
eddies shift and dance around him,
bearing evil rumors
to frighten and
dismay.

What ever you do to greet the day, you can always leave a comment. Such words are better than coffee.

I can hear the road music clearly in the first poem.  I swear the early morning amplifies those sounds.  The second reminds me of an encounter I experienced while on the trail in the Arizona desert.  I was riding one of the ranch horses bareback through a vibrant area across the road when he stopped dead and stared down the trail.  About thirty feet or so ahead of us was the most spectacular mule deer buck staring back.  The tableau lasted for a good couple of minutes before the deer ran off and we resumed our trek.  It was an incredible experience.  Thank you for bringing me back there. :)

Dawn encounter speaks to me more eloquently than the other. Maybe that's just me, preferring nature over road noise, but then, I get enough of that. ;)  You are so lucky to have such chance meetings to start your day.

Both beautiful in their imagery. So easily put in moment.

 The second reminded me of my childhood in Northern N.J. So many mornings awakening to a deer in my yard. Beautiful and fleeting moments.

Loved them both, messages well conveyed, but Dawn Encounter was my favorite... blood-red scent of danger... and ... bearing evil rumors... so sublime. I live for moments like those... as always, well done, Parker... cheers... Gary....

To have such creatures appear, then vanish, is magical. How much fun you must have had. Memories and more are companions of the early dawn.

Dawn Encounter was quite unexpected and powerful  in reality. But there are other encounters - with rabbits, killdeer, raccoons, owls, even. And once, memorably, with a skunk. All quite wonderful.

There are many deer, and we are entering their season. The morning mists lift to reveal them. This was special, though. Thank you.

Glad you liked that mixture of imagery and sensory appeals. Somehow, I figured you might like Dawn Encounter. Thank you for reading, and for letting these steep in your mind.

Both filled the minds eye with pictures and sounds especially from the first.  No deer here but i like the fog over at the pond when i'm there early .. nice set of poems, Parker!

Thank you, tim.  You and I know the songs of traffic. And you never quite know what creatures will appear from the morning mist - sometimes, I think it is like an enchantment. I am very glad you liked these.
