Disasters, Delights and Other Detours - 75. Summer Riches
Strawberries
growing wild in the field
give themselves away by their white flowers;
yet they still hide successfully behind clover,
bright red peeking shyly through sweet green,
like June’s treasure scattered
at my feet.
Raspberries
are best eaten at dawn,
hanging as rubies amongst the thorns,
so pensive passersby on the path pause to pluck,
savoring such sweetness on the tongue,
tasting like joy distilled
by the sun.
Blueberries
must be carefully watched
for the first subtle hints of color
and most zealously guarded with netting and fence
against clever blue jays and robins,
so that I may have some
for breakfast.
Blackberries
always seem on the move,
never waiting in one patch of sun,
but ever shifting, migrating to new ground,
there to tantalize bird, bear or boy
with sweet siren songs
of summer.
I hope you found these to be a treat. Any comments or thoughts are always appreciated.
