What I Think

WARNING ***Discussion of race, religion, bigotry lies ahead. It's what I feel and think. If you don't like what I feel and think feel free to ignore this blog. If your mind is closed, do not read this blog. If you are afraid of your own truth, do not read this blog. If you are looking for honesty and acceptance, I hope you choose to read on. ***

I've been thinking about what is going on in our world besides COVID-19. I wish it wasn't what has been happening. I've been debating saying anything about how I feel but an online posting by a woman, who is an educator just made me decide. I wish I knew her name but it's not on what I listened to. However, there is a lot online about this topic.  About the scientific fact there is only a single race of people on the planet Earth.

Like other groups of animals we come in various colours, shapes and styles. Cats, for example, come in a rainbow of colours, some with folded ears, some with extra toes, some with no tails or fur... do we shun tailless cats? Think of them as less of a cat because of this fact? No. Do we think they are dogs because they have no tail, or some other lesser species? NO!

The same goes for skin colour. Skin pigmentation does not signal a different race, nor does your religion.  As the lady says, believing that is stupid and wrong.

The invention that Black people and others are a different race is, like religion, a human invention.  It was made up because it was easier to believe that, so oppressors and slavers could defend what they were doing. We still do it. We decide based on skin colour, who a person is, what they are.  Religion was made up also as a form of control. So a few could control many with the fear of the Almighty.

Believe me, Jesus Christ, who I do believe existed, was not a white man. He did not have blue eyes and blond hair.  But how can such wisdom come from someone not white? Because it came from a fellow human being with the same depth of being, of caring that exists in many of us today. We come in all colours.

Yesterday, I listened to weeping Black women, who were being robbed in their own stores by other Black people, at gun point. They were saying, Black lives don't even matter to ourselves. It's heartbreaking.

There are lots of instances of white people doing the same to fellow white people.

Racism is alive and well, same-colour on same-colour violence and hatred is alive and well.

We need to stop. We need to use our intelligence and see there are good and bad people in all colours and genders. Colour is not a marker, it does not define if we will be good, bad, intelligent, racist, quiet, loud, violent, gentle, loving or hating. There is no racism gene. How we behave and what we believe is learned.

And we can unlearn it.

Do not be afraid to look at yourself as I look at myself. Reach out to all your brothers and sisters and fellow humans, no matter what they call themselves, who they love or what they believe.

As a very out Gay man I have fought for my right to BE. Black Gay friends have had it doubly hard. That is wrong...WRONG!

IT NEEDS TO STOP. STOP THE HATRED, STOP BEING AFRAID. Love your fellow man.

Yes, there be monsters but they are not defined by colour.

I agree with you Mike, and I wish for that time too. I've always said, I hate using labels, but I use them them like everyone else.

This could probably be phrased better, so I hope what I'm intending to say comes through:

Most of the "same on same violence" is because we all still self-segregate ourselves.  :(

And race is a social construct. If we were cats or dogs, there's not enough variation between humans to separate us into different breeds.  Not to mention there were times in US history that Italians and Irish weren't considered "white".

People need to learn what love it.  How can you be happy when others suffer?

Indeed they do, Ashi.  I don't know, but we have managed it for a long time.

thank You for sharing Your thoughts. it's been distressing lately. i shared it with Phil who is a person of color & has been targeted & will probably share it with our, fairly obviously,  not white, children. people are people are people

We are all people.  I'm not sure if this can be fixed. Especially when we seem not to really care who we hurt.  Education is the key. It should not just be for those who have the money to go to school. Perhaps it's time to change this and make schools available to all. Our tax dollars at work.  Perhaps, living wages and a national minimum income would help.

Well said Mike, thanks for sharing your thoughts. People really do need to learn to love  how can they be happy whilst other's around them suffer.

Thank you, chris.

Eloquently said and how very true.

We could all learn a lot from watching young children. They don't care about color, gender or anything other than who gets to go down the slide first. They are taught by adults to treat people differently.

So many adults need to relearn a lot about the world.

Indeed. Everything I need to know, I learned in kindergarten.

yesterday I saw a news piece featuring a four-year-old who wanted to march in a "peace rally ". Mama was really proud that she wanted to March. This was followed by pictures of the little girl marching. Her sweet little face I turned to one of pure hatred. She was stomping her feet swinging her little fists around, and generally looked like she was throwing a childhood fit while shouting slogans.                                       Hatred like that is taught. What could have possibly directly affected that child's life to teach her such hatred, unless her parents have been shouting it at her for months. People need to learn to teach their children well. You teach them to hate then they they teach their children to hate, and the cycle never breaks.

How horribly sad.  I knew a 'white power' family when I was young. They taught it to their kids … their library contained books such as how to make bombs with household products.  Fun times.

Yes, I think we all do. But I think the more we talk about. The more we admit it … brings it out into the open. And maybe the next time something stupid is ready to slip from our lips, we will stop it.

Thanks, A.

We do segregate ourselves. But we can stop doing it.

Education is a huge part. Higher education should not be only for those who can pay for it or the odd scholarship for some poor kids. It should be open and available to every person who wants to attend. Just because you're poor doesn't mean you're stupid. And your lot, should not hold you back from improving yourself.

Perhaps spending less on the military or even the police to pay for more schooling. There's a lot of talk about defunding them … as an ex-cop, I can tell you, it's a bad idea. I'm not saying changes shouldn't be made. Just that … given what I know, you do not want to go there.

I am not going to talk about police issue, as it involves economic planning and stabilization of society, which will eventually leads to politics even if I tread carefully.  I'll simply skip it.  Though I agree defunding right now is a HORRIBLE idea (if not catastrophic).  The stop-bleed immediate goal is to de-hostilize among people (and less skepticism of police's role in society.  A few bad cops gave bad reps, but the job is still essential, until people can moderate themselves, which seems to be even longer way to go than when I was a kid...).

Education is not a political issue so I can talk about it.  I don't think human compassion should be part of higher education.  It should be part of basic education, fully integrated into all part of the curriculum, through and through.  The problem with our education here in the U.S. anyways, is that we're currently more focused on academic/arithmetic/vocational stuff but not enough humanity.  Lack of exposure to people who is not a split-image of us only exacerbated it, distill false mental images of race, sex, sexual orientation, religion, culture, you name it.  And I hate to say this, the advent of online classes will make human interaction issue even worse.  I'll leave it at here.  If I have time, I'll talk in my blog what I think about education and Information Revolution and why people are more disconnected from the world more than ever.

You're right,  compassion should be taught /discussed at a young age and yes .. all through those years.   I think not teaching that is wrong, just like canceling classes for the Arts is. People need culture and expression, I completely agree with you.

I am just saying all education should be 'free' … of course, our taxes pay for that but it should be available to everyone no matter their background or ability to pay.

I hope I didn't sound snarky, because it really wasn't intended to be that way.  Anyways.  Let's just wait for it to quiet down and hope the world become normal again.  Now all I could think of is how to reintegrate protestors when life goes normal again....  I don't know if you guys remember back in the 90s or before.  Some protestors might have trouble finding jobs afterward and that'll create the big issues as if we don't have enough homeless people already.  We don't want people turn desperate and later turn violent (which is already happening anyways, as some protestors are just frustrated with their financial issues with COVID-19 going on).  The world has enough problems already.  We don't need to add more problems unnecessarily.  Flickr and Wired are already giving tips to photographers on how to protect privacy to people (protestors or photographers themselves) so people won't be targeted.

You weren't snarky at all. People need help, but they also need to willing to be helped. We all need to work if we truly want change.
