Happy Birthday, Colin!!

It's been a real pleasure getting to know you through GA, and we're all very fortunate to have such a kind, thoughtful, witty, talented, positive person in our midst. May the coming year bring you all the happiness, joy, and success that you deserve and may your birthday be the best ever! :D

Happy Belated Birthday

Actually you're still a few hours early based on California time. Graeme (and the rest of us) have been giving him birthday wishes based on Australian time ;)

Never too early to start celebrating though, especially for such a nifty member :D

Thanks, everybody!

I don't feel older, just more tired. My folks told me that college would do that to me, and I should go to bed at a "decent time" -- the same litany I heard from them starting around the 9th grade! :P But now I realize they were right.

Turning 18 means I can now do these things that I couldn't do before I achieved this lofty age (as I thought of them, and except for the first three items there's no meaning to the order of the list or the lack thereof:

  • I can apply for domestic partnership with Doug. We filled out the form and will put it in the mail tomorrow with our check for $33.00.
  • I can register to vote. w00t!!! I will do that, and will vote in every election, national, state, and local. I believe in voting and participating in the process.
  • My Minor's Permit will convert to a regular driver's license and won't have any of the restrictions about the age of passengers.
  • I can go see any movie I want and not pay attention to the rating. X-rated? No problem!
  • I can rent and purchase pornographic movies from the local video store.
  • I get the privilege of registering for the Selective Service within 30 days from today. Foo!
  • If I break the law, I will be treated as an adult and will go through the regular court process, not juvenile court.
  • I can sign contracts and legal documents.
  • I can open a checking account without my parent's signature.
  • I can get a job without my parent's approval.
  • If I had a job and/or enough money in the bank, and a good credit rating, I can rent an apartment, buy a house, buy a car, apply for and get a credit card or even lots of credit cards.
  • I can get married.
  • I can get divorced (if I was married).
  • Doug pointed out that we can be called to do jury duty. The court gets electronic records from the California Department of Motor Vehicles and the Registrar of Voters from the county where you're registered to vote and electronically merges these records to create a pool of prospective jurors.

Basically, I have almost all of the rights of any other adult in California. But there are some exceptions:

  1. I cannot gamble until I'm 21 years old.
  2. I cannot purchase and/or consume alcoholic beverages until I'm 21 years old.
  3. I cannot have sex with anyone under 18 years of age, male or female, and it's a felony if I do.
  4. I cannot marry the man I love. This isn't an age limitation, unfortunately.

The best opportunity for me becoming 18 years old is that I can feel like an adult. I might not, but I can. Whatever.

My granddad sent me a birthday email, and reminded me of one of his favoirite sayings: "After 16 it's all downhill." And another, as well: "Now you're sliding down the razor blade of life."

But the very best thing about becoming 18 years old is that so many great people are congratulating me for doing just that!

Again, thank you! You guys and gals rock!

I seem to recall that that was your intention, but I'll echo Kevin's subdued response with an equally subdued:

CONGRATULATIONS!

Hey Colin,

not to be a debbie downer, but while it is easy to apply for domestic partnership in CA, you might have to go through a full fledged divorce (buddha forbid that happens to you & Doug).

You've probably seen this but, here's a link to the CA Secretary of State site:

http://www.sos.ca.gov/dpregistry/dp_faqs.htm <---(side note: I first read that as 'dp fags')

Basically, you can 'terminate a domestic partnership' the easy way if you meet certain conditions.

Some domestic partnerships may be terminated without judicial intervention by filing a prescribed Notice of Termination of Domestic Partnership with the Secretary of State. A registered domestic partnership is eligible for termination by way of the nonjudicial "summary" procedure only if all of the conditions specified below exist at the time the partners file the Notice of Termination of Domestic Partnership.

[*]The Notice of Termination of Domestic Partnership must be signed by both domestic partners.

[*]There are no children of the relationship born before or after registration of the domestic partnership, or adopted by the parties after registration of the domestic partnership, and neither of the domestic partners, to their knowledge, is pregnant.

[*]The domestic partnership is not more than five years in duration.

[*]Neither party has any interest in real property, other than the lease of a residence occupied by either party that (i) does not include an option to purchase, and (ii) terminates within one year from the date of filing of the Notice of Termination of Domestic Partnership.

[*]There are no unpaid obligations in excess of the amount permitted by Ca Fam
