A Fairy Out of Her Tale - Dear Diary - 9. Scene 09

In which Nessa has to run away from the trees

4th January, 1995

Dear Diary of a Marathon Runner,

I'm sorry I had to cut you off so suddenly. It's now sunset again, and I can't walk another step without the blisters in my feet pleading for mercy and my leg muscles going on a mutiny against my brain. At least I should be safe for now in this abandoned house made of wood that is too dead to chase me.

I ran from sunrise to sunset. Twelve hours. That's about... twelve hours more than I would've liked. But the trees didn't give me a choice.

The fairies in that house came for me when they heard my scream. The mother came out first to see what was going on, with her tree little children spying from behind the door, though she tried to keep them away with her body. The light from inside helped me recognise her as Araci Truira, one of mum's occasional partners and the one she named my brother Oraci after. I didn't know her family had a house so far away from town. If I had known what I was walking into, I would've ran to the hills instead.

It would've been bad enough to cross paths with a random fairy. But a fairy who loved mum and would surely have learned about her husband's murder as soon as it happened...

I never stood a chance.

'It’s you!' Araci's children tried to get even closer, in the way that children get fascinated by giant fangs that are about to cut them in half, but she locked them back inside. 'How dare you invade my home? Are you trying to kill every one of Nelma's lovers? You were such a sweet child, what went wrong with you?'

I'm not allowed to communicate with other fairies, so I looked away.

'Poor Morumpi, he was such a kind soul! You mum loved him so much! You're a heartless monster! But if you're so bent on destroying Nelma's life, I'm going to stop you here! I call forth the forces of Nature to chase you away from this forest! Disappear, Nessa! You don't belong here!'

Every plant within reach struck at me with their branches, thorns and leaves. Everywhere I went, nature followed, hurting me in whatever way it could. I ran past Araci's house, hoping it would be the end of it, but no. The trees spread the message through the whole forest. Now, the moment I step outside, I'm greeted by branches swinging to my face.

I'm stuck here until I can move again. No food, no water, and soon no light.

It was good knowing you, Dear Diary. I didn't manage to give you a name, but hopefully whoever finds you lying next to my skeleton years from now will be able to give you the attention you deserve.

Good night, and good-bye.

Thanks for reading!
Yes, Nessa's mother had other lovers and no, her husband didn't mind (he probably had his own other lovers too). Fairies don't do monogamy the way we tend to think of it - but I'll let Nessa explain the details when the time comes (yes, there will be a time for that).
We'll see how Nessa managed to escape the killer forest on Sunday. Unless you would be oh so kind as to become my patron (link on my profile), in which case you get to read a whole week's worth of extra chapters.

Dear Diary of a Thousand Dreams, or is it "Diary of a Thousand...," period. As a Diary of a thousand questions, I'm left wondering what type of implement is she using to to write in diary?  My thinking is that every page is impregnated with inks of different colors and all she has to use is a very sharp, fine or extra-fine pointed stick, which when pressed to the page brings forth the ink.  If she taps once, it's a black ink, tapping the page twice gets another color ink and so on.  It is like magic, really.  Maybe there's even a way to write with 'invisible ink,' so the Fairy-SWAT team can't read the diary.  Diary of a thousand 'commas' perhaps? Great scenes, setting us up for...?

Whenever Nessa gets the chance she definitely puts colours everywhere. One day her diary will be regarded as a work of art, not just for its words, but for its appearance. :)

Thanks for the comment, I hope you keep enjoying the story!

Awha sorry I have been meaning to catch up, but with a huge blizzard falling in Ireland as well as my own writing; it boils down to time constraints. And yes she is changing even if she doesn't realize it yet. :)

I'm in Glasgow, so I feel you. Yesterday I though the snow period was over, only to be greeted by fresh snowfall early in the morning (though since then it's rained and most of the snow is definitely gone). That said, I had the time of my life playing in all that snow. I've been here for 10 years and that was the most snow I've seen, so I enjoyed it as much as I could (and then shut myself indoors while it turned to slippery ice so I don't risk aggravating my existing injuries...)

Welcome back, you're only half way through now! :D

Awha thanks lol; ah I'll catch pretty quickly. That's great to hear, I was out the snow a lot to at the start; though not for leisure after storm Emma. I live in the countryside so... yeah everwhere was unpassable. We had to dig our way into town with the tractor; then once that was done, we had to help people. Dublin was the quickest to be cleared, meanwhile were still cleaning up the leftover out in the sticks lol. So I guess that was my phone, preparing and cleaning up after the snow for people and shops to be able to get food from outside sources.

Sounds like an adventure...

I've always lived in big cities (I was born in a place that's 2x Glasgow) and that's one of the reason I don't necessarily want to live in tiny places in the middle of nowhere.
That said, it's also the reason why I would want to move to Northern Finland and be surrounded by snow 200 days/year.

Contradictions. Contradictions.

Awha I love the countryside. It is a little quiet sometimes but I don't mind that all that much. I wouldn't go back to a city, I lived in Dublin and moved out and its the best experience I have ever had. I feel so free being in the countryside. Being close enough to a large town is decent thinking, but It is a lot better than Dublin. Not that I don't love Dublin, I love it all the same but In a different retrospect. I to share a similar dream, to move to Norway, Sweeden or Iceland; to at least own a vacation house would be enough.
