    Word Triggers

    By Valkyrie

Certain otherwise-innocuous words can be a trigger for some people.  Maybe it's a negative association with the word - a reminder of past trauma or a social faux pas.  It could be a word that becomes an inside joke - an innocent word given a not-so-innocent meaning.  These words make us cringe and avoid them and not really want to explain our reaction to other people.  For me, a certain spring-blooming flower is a word trigger.  I avoid saying the name of this flower because I have  negative ass

Prompt 822 and Prompt 823

Welcome to March. Okay, so it is a few days in, but it is the first Friday of the month. So it is also a month for the Irish with St. Patrick's Day here in the United States, which reminds me that it is time for new prompts. Prompt 822 - Creative Tag - First Line "What on earth are you wearing?" Prompt 823 - Creative  Tag - Promises Your grandmother always warned you not to make promises you couldn't keep. However, you never thought she was being serious. Until you

New Stories Update Mar 5, 2020

By now, you have probably noticed that we have upgraded the Stories software on the site.  There are a bunch of what I would call quality of life updates and a major new feature. There is now an easy way to update your Author Profile area: For promoted author, you can now update your logo here yourself.  Banners need to be 848x121 pixels. All authors will be able to add their website link and author bio.  This is also where future Author Profile fields will show up, if/when

Time Flies.... Renee update!

Wow, it's been a while since I wrote a blog that wasn't for the various GA staff blogs. Things are still super crazy here, some good and some bad. Unfortunately, I have become pretty lax in keeping up on GA, and I'm afraid that's meant the loss of some close friendships, hopefully they can rebuilt. It sucks, but real life has been about all I've been able to handle for the last year or so. Hopefully that will change and I'll be around more, but I can't promise anything at the moment. It's b

Ask an Author 2.0 #29

First Wednesday of the month, so we’re back at it. One question, five authors including me. I decided not to ignore my name on the list of authors the questioner supplied. I liked this one. Since responses are listed in author alphabetical order, I get to go first. ◊ ◊ ◊ Are there themes that can’t seem to let you go? Ideas that you never seem to tire of exploring?   ◊ ◊ ◊ @Carlos Hazday The predominant theme in nearly all my work is one of the most common ones in

Coronavirus COVID-19

The coronavirus is large and in charge in the news cycles right now. Since I work in healthcare, it's sort of center-stage in my world. I'll say this now - though I work in medicine, I am not an expert in virology or epidemiology. However, I have access to both of those types of experts, and I listen very closely to what they're saying. The overall messaging is: It's likely that there will be a worldwide pandemic. It's likely that there will be a huge disruption of services, due to how many

March CSR Feature: Elixir by Comicality

Topics and Moderation

On GA we like to allow members to discuss a variety of subjects relating to writing, reading, gay fiction, the LGBTQIA community, and more. There are many places on the site to post topics and information, depending on where the conversation fits best. In recent months, we have discovered that topics regarding 'inclusivity' regardless of the subject being sexuality, gender, culture, etc... continually veer into either a heated debate or political commentary or themes. Due to this creating a repe

Falling In Love Again

It's a funny thing, marriage. We go through life together my husband and I. We work, commute, shop, watch TV, cook, eat, shower, make love, laugh, talk and all the other things we do, together each day. Often by rote. Often without a lot of thought.  I care for him during those times he is in the troughs of depression. When he's ill. When he's afraid. During the nights when nightmares of the past haunt him. It's my duty as his partner to be there for him. It isn't a chore, it's a privilege

Danger: Inclusive Messaging Ahead

Consider the title your warning. This is my blog. I write what I want. Deal with it.    I think it's a shame that we can't have philosophical discussions on ways to potentially expand and improve our writing horizons without someone taking it personally and ruining the party. This is supposed to be a website for authors and their stories. You'd think that discussing writing techniques and tools would be integral to that. When it comes to writing tools, techniques, and advice, you'

Prompt 820 and Prompt 821

Wow, February just flew by and here we are at the last Friday of the month. Guess that means new prompts for one and all. Prompt 820 - Creative Tag - A New Love Valentine's Day is long over but just before the month is over you get a call from a stranger, stating he is a lawyer and asking you to come for the reading of a will. You find your Grandmother had a great love before your grandfather, he never got over her, and he has left his estate to the oldest of her grandchildren whi

Another Ninety Days

I got the results of my blood work back a week and a half ago. I will go see my doctor to officially discuss them in a couple of weeks, but he messaged through our electronic health record. He applauded the twenty point drop on my cholesterol, but ... said that he'd still like me to consider statins. That the drop alone isn't enough to push me into the "normal" range for heart-attack risk. Well, I need one more data point to decide. If what I'm doing is working, even if it's slow ... then m

February CSR Discussion Day: Self-Portraits by Richie Tennyson

Did you catch this month's CSR featured story, Self-Portraits, by Richie Tennyson? Have you read the story? It's a quick read, for all that it is more than forty thousand words. Make sure you share your thoughts about the story or Richie's other stories. But first, as always, enjoy my interview with him!    Are you a person who makes their bed in the morning, or do you not see much point? I do the most half-hearted feeble bed-making. I don’t see much point but I know I should at l
