Feels Like The First Time

Wow, this is joyously freaky!   I'm long-in-the-tooth, but only recently committed to writing full-time, all the time (a Coming Out of sorts for me). I suppose I finally got tired of keeping my head down, preaching that old mantra, "you have to do what you have to do, to do what you want to do" (paraphrase of St Augustine). I think it's fitting thus, to start off with immortal words that shook me out of space, into my true and rightful place:   "It's better to physically forc

Improve & Encourage #10: Between a Rock and a Hard Place

I hope you all enjoyed the last Improve & Encourage feature, because it's time for another one. These features are meant to both provide feedback to authors and, similar to story reviews, point out stories that readers might not otherwise have found. It's similar to a review, in that the person doing the critique tells you what they liked about the story, but it differs in that they also provide constructive criticism. Each author signed up to participate, and sign up's are still open!  Thes

Tech Tuesday: Author Posting Rules Visibility

We are currently testing a bug fix update to Stories, 2.2.4, that also contains a minor, but important feature.  Site rules at the source when posting new Stories and new chapters and when editing them. This is just a sample of the test code in process:   One of the issues we have at Gay Authors is that we have a lot of rules and standards that authors are expected to follow, but they are not always easy to get to.  This update will place rule boxes right at the point of use

Inception

This is an interesting movie.  It is probably the only movie I know that you have to pay full attention in and stay engaged with because it is such a mind job.  Literally.  The special effects are cool.  The concepts are crazy and the acting is interested.  I quite enjoy the movie.  If you haven't watched it, check it out.  I added the top.  You'll know what it is for after you watch the movie.

March CSR Discussion Day: Nocturnal Emissions by JulieLHayes

Do you read fanfiction? There are a lot of readers who enjoy it, and a lot of writers who write it, including Myr. It's a small, but growing group on GA. So this month I thought I'd feature a Harry Potter fanfiction featuring Sirius Black and Remus Lupin--Nocturnal Emissions by Julie L Hayes. Did you have a chance to read it? Make sure you share your thoughts below, but first enjoy this  interview with Julie!   Do you eat your fruits and vegetables? Definitely! More vegetables tha

Blogging from the UK

So here’s what’s new.   I’ve returned to the land of my ancestors. The little, funny-shaped island on the top left-hand corner of Europe where I spent most of my childhood, including half of my school life and a few chaotic years as an adult.   This is the fourth time that I have been back since I was shipped off to the new world as a teenager and it seems that each time I return, this once very familiar place has moved a little further away. I have to admit that after sevent

Patriot Games by Tom Clancy

I have been a fan of Tom Clancy's books since about 1991 or so when I first read Hunt for the Red October.  The books tend to be almost the only books I read outside of Fantasy and Sci-Fi.  I'm a bit behind on the latest books that have the co-authors (since Tom Clancy is no longer with us) started up.  I have spent many, many enjoyable hours reading his books.  Patriot Games is the first of the Jack Ryan books.  (Hunt for the Red October is 2nd, I think it is).  He has 3 intertwined series.  Jo

WORDS

Words are amazing aren't they? Are we even aware of how much they can affect other people? The casual use of a nickname. A  kind “Hello” when you’re having a bad day. A softly muttered “Bite me,” when someone crosses you, or you cross someone else!   Words we use to make light of a situation; or that attempt to pretty something up, make a concept or idea less gritty, better for polite company.   Yes, words are powerful.  Think of a parent with a child.  A sharp

Dating Bi-Curious Men “Love”

Love, we all believe in it and hope one day to find it. While growing up we will learn many different types of love, from your family, the love of a friend and of course the love someone special gives you. In stories we are told that one day you will find the one and all will begin to fall into place, as if there really is just one person that will come sweep you off your feet? This often leading you to believe that out there only one person will ever love you fully.   So why is it whe

CorningWare Soup Mug

I picked this pair of beauties up back in October.  What a great buy!  I was eating microwavable soup for lunch at work.  Soup allowed me to easily control lunch.  These mugs work great for a can of Progresso soup. They paid for themselves very quickly since the canned soup is much cheaper than the microwavable soup.   Oh, they come in so many colors too.  I went for the white since they were cheap.

March Classic Author Excerpt: Paying the Piper by Libby Drew

Did you catch Monday's blog featuring Libby Drew's murder mystery, Paying the Piper? If you're a fan of her story, don't forget to download the signature graphic to share it through the month! If you haven't read the story yet, maybe this excerpt will help change your mind!    I chose this excerpt because it's the start of the story. It's very dramatic, for one, shocking and graphic, but you also get a very quick glimpse into the main characters, both their basic personality and a lot

Tech Tuesday - Story Formatting Issues

This week's blog is going to be a little light.  I'm extremely busy with my move.  I will be relaxing this time in two weeks, I hope! Now, I think everyone has bumped into some weird spacing issues or weird formatting issues when reading stories on the site.  This is especially true of older stories that were brought in from the days when we hosted stories as webpages.  @A.J. has been working hard to clean up visually, by having the system fix the code on the fly.  We are working on a way f

Stories so White

Fascinating article about an author rewriting her first book after a barrage of negative Tweets.   The over-the-top reactions by some of her fans don't surprise me. An idiot on GA lambasted me when I had the chutzpah to call out an author he liked. He claimed she was trying. Well, if she was trying then she would have appreciated my telling her what she wrote was crap. She did. And she earned my respect by acknowledging she didn't have any knowledge of what she was writing about and as

This movie is interesting.  The actors are cute in it.  It does wander right into controversial teritory of course. It's definitely worth seeing for the character development and tough topics it hits on.

March Classic Author Feature: Paying the Piper by Libby Drew

This month's great mystery isn't how to find the Leprechaun's gold at the end of the rainbow... but just whodunnit in Libby Drew's murder mystery story, Paying the Piper. Set in small town, USA, this story is really driven by the characters--and with a small town, everyone knows everyone and ALL their business--so the drama is high!     Length: 81,568 words Description: One small town, two murders, and countless suspects. Irreverent police chief, Quent, and his reluctan

The Merlin Trilogy by Mary Stewart

I'm sure the first thing that pops in your head is... why are there 5 different books here for a Trilogy?  Depends on how you look at things.  The hardcover (listed first) contains the 3 books listed next. (The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills, and The Last Enchantment)  The trilogy follows the life of Myrddin Emrys or Merlin if you prefer.  I love books 1 and 2 and found book 3 of the trilogy dry and boring.  This does boil down to my interest as in books 1 and 2, Merlin is young to middle age.
