Weekly Wrap Up (Sept. 15 - Sept. 21)

    By wildone

First thing first, I really need anyone who is thinking to enter our yearly Anthology, please see Val's Thursday blog and if you fingers haven't started typing, get them going! As you read this, I am indisposed. Read into that what you want . But I'm up by a lake in the mountains looking at the colours change for fall.  So next week in the northern hemisphere, we flip into fall, autumn, whatever you like to call it. Down under the equator, they are about to hit spring   What is y

    Word Triggers

    By Valkyrie

Certain otherwise-innocuous words can be a trigger for some people.  Maybe it's a negative association with the word - a reminder of past trauma or a social faux pas.  It could be a word that becomes an inside joke - an innocent word given a not-so-innocent meaning.  These words make us cringe and avoid them and not really want to explain our reaction to other people.  For me, a certain spring-blooming flower is a word trigger.  I avoid saying the name of this flower because I have  negative ass

May Classic Author Excerpt: The Price of Revelation by Tiff

Did you check out the banner from Monday's blog for this month's Classic Author Feature? Drew Espinosa chose Tiff's story, The Price of Revelation. This teen story is full of angst and romance, with a few life lessons tossed in. I asked Drew why he picked this story and excerpt to share, and this is what he had to say:   Drew said: With those opening words, I was immediately sucked in. For me, I had to know what happened. What caused the breakdown of Sean's dad? What did Sean do? I had

May Classic Author Feature: The Price of Revelation by Tiff

This month's feature, The Price of Revelation by Tiff, is an older story that not many current members might be aware of. Originally posted back when promoted authors had their own websites, this story was migrated in the first GA Stories upgrade. It hasn't garnered too many views since then, but maybe that can change with this feature chosen by Drew Espinosa. Check it out, and if you want to support this month's feature, download the banner at the bottom of the blog to place in your signature!

How should I feel?

My grandfather died. I should feel sad right? I feel nothing. I loved my grandfather and I know he loved me, he told all of us every chance he got that he loved us. I don't even feel bad that I'm not really sad. My brain is telling me that this makes me a sick and fucked up person. My mind is also telling me that I know I should feel a certain way. And then it tells me that I should feel ashamed that I'm not sad. Don't get me wrong....I'm not happy. On the other hand, I'm not sad either. I guess

Elders React To Young Photos of Themselves

In this episode of React, the elders of the show react to photos taken of them when they were young.   I thought it was pretty touching, especially the guy who realized that all of the friends that were with him in the mountaintop photo were all passed on.   And it was interesting watching them react to their 30's/40's photos and about how much energy they had...there's something I think is pretty cool about these particular decade's of one's life, and it kind of felt like th

Compassion

This contains some descriptions of animal abuse. If you're sensitive you may not want to read on.      I’m reading a book called, Saving Simon by Jon Katz. Simon is a donkey and Jon Katz is a writer. He writes often about dogs. This is the first thing of his I’ve read. It is sad and horrible, yet uplifting and wondrous.   Simon was abandoned on the farm where he lived.  Left in what they thing was a hog pen, with no water or food except for what the small boy who li

Climbing out of the oblivion

I’ve been suffering with writer’s block for a few months now, but slowly the creative juices are beginning to unclog and flow once again. Most of this block can be attributed to my recent bout with increased arthritic inflammation in my left knee. My PC sent me to x-ray and the radiologists diagnosed pseudo-gout. My PC who isn’t an MD, but an ARNP, did not accept this diagnosis because she had no knowledge of this affliction. She decided I was suffering from regular ol’ gout because my uric acid

Horror films and being a Gay man

Like many horror fans, I am awaiting Ridley Scott's return to Aliens Franchise with Aliens: Covenant. It is a highly anticipated film for horror junkies, while I did enjoy "Split" with is psycho horror, I am still a fan of hybrid Sci-Fi/horror genre. Dead Space will remain a favorite game of mine.   I love getting scared a bit, then finding a hand to hold preferably a boyfriend's hand, and then later on release the stress of the experience in a fun way   That made me think ab

Art Imitates Life... Life Imitates Art

Yesterday afternoon, I had the day off and spent a couple of hours at the contemporary art museum here in town. The latest exhibition showcases a raw, vibrant display of street art, including graffiti, photography, and a rare collection of Jean-Michel Basquiat scribbles/doodles done a year before he became famous.   Just a few weeks ago, I saw Julian Schnabel's film "Basquiat" at a local theater (on original 35mm, complete with snaps and pops and blips on the screen), followed by a Q&a

Officer Shot, Killed At WaWa Store in Bear, Delaware

Freaky shit.   Officer Shot, Killed at Convenience Store in Bear, DE   This stuff happens, but there's something surreal about this one for me because I am very familiar with the store. I used to walk there all the time when I was a kid because I lived like a 10-minute walk there back then. I also pretty much always get my gas from that WaWa- I'm usually at that store at least once a week or two weeks.   This very pro-NRA conservative
