November CSR Discussion Day: Hustle by Talo Segura

    By Cia

Wow, November already. With the year almost over, I wanted to keep featuring things that kept readers guessing and challenge the idea of the traditional reading genres and stories. What did you think of Hustle? Share your thoughts below, but first, the interview!! Chocolate or Vanilla? I have to cheat... both! What's your favorite room in your home? Do you plot or write there? I don't have a favourite room and I write where ever I find myself alone and not being disturbed, of

Why are people so stupid?

OK, I might not be in the best frame of mind as I type this, but I seriously need to vent - you may want to brace yourselves for some choice language. It's either rant here, or tell a few people exactly what I think of them.   Been a nice quiet morning on my ward.   Sure some of the kidides are suffering side effects from the chemo, but they were all in good spirits and at least they all managed to keep breakfast down.   For a change, we have full nursing support on the ward - first time

If the hand ain't up, I don't know the answer!

If I knew the answer to your question, do you really think I'd be slid so far down in my seat that the person in front of me can see my feet?   Nah. I'd probably be holding up a "pick me" sign desperate to sound kinda smart for once in my life.   Most teachers understand this. But my maths teacher hasn't seemed to take the fucking hint yet. I swear this guy has it out for me. He'll walk up behind me and look to see which homework question I wasn't able to do and make sure that he asks me t

Chapters of Life

There's been several times as life moved along that I felt I could close a chapter and move along. One was my move from home, never to go back except to visit. That was the first closure I ever felt.   I think the second chapter would be when I found out I was pregnant. Life definitely changes as you once knew it if you intend to be the kind of parent any child needs. So, I closed the chapter of not being responsible for anyone but myself. My husband has always taken care of himself and b

LEAVE ME ALONE

I swear, if I do not get my own room in the next year, I'm moving the fuck out. Sam just marches in here like it's his room too. Well, I'm 2 years older, therefore the room is like... 80% mine. I'm 7 inches taller than the bastard, clearly I need more space than that midget fucker. But nah, he spreads himself out so he does. Thinks he fucking owns the place. Last night, he asked me to tidy up my side of the room. MY SIDE. My side is my side and I'll do what I like with it, mate. Apparently

Magpie's Pi-day Quiche!

Today is Pi-day! 3.14, that is. So, since it's Pi-day, Magpie decided that we should have quiche for dinner. This quiche turned out to be a bona fide protein bomb and so, so tasty!   You need:   300g chicken 300g smoked bacon about 4 medium sized mushrooms 1/4 of a large leek 4 eggs 1/4 litre of milk a handful of fresh thyme a handful of fresh chives salt and pepper pie crust (we cheated, because we're lazy people, and made it with

Culinary Experiments

Tonight is experimentation night. As many of you know, I have a few health complaints that are vastly improved by changes in diet. One of those changes involves cutting out certain foods altogether, and two of those foods are beef and tomatoes. This means that one of my favourite dishes - Lasagne - is well out of bounds.   Anyway, tonight, I have set myself a challenge - is it possible to make a Lasagne, without minced/ground beef and more challengingly, without tomatoes? Stick with me her

America: violence good, male nudity bad

"Nudity in America is a four letter word. Especially when it comes to men. I really do find that pretty silly and ironic at the same time. I was raised in a very Midwestern lifestyle and quite prudish when it comes to sex and nudity. But that is me. What I am not is judgmental. How is it possible in America we can show violence and war... but god save us if we show a nipple in a photo! There is definitely a double standard when it comes to male nudity in America. We can objectify the hell out of

Just trying to get through the day

March is a rough month. That sounds odd I know, but I will explain.   Growing up the month of March was something my family knew would be busy and fun. March held two big events for my family - my mother's birthday and my parent's anniversary. These things were something that my family knew would start and finish major events.   Today is March 10th and my mother would have been 74 today. My father and I have sort of avoided talking about it because neither of us wants to break down again. It

Why Deny Life Saving Drugs to Children?

http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/10/health/cohen-josh/index.html?hpt=hp_c2   This is one of those really sad cases that on the surface, the evil company is holding drugs from dying kids to use, but on a deeper level, it is an issue with how our economic, social, and regulatory model is structured in a way that makes it a no-win scenario.   If this is a problem, I would also say Americans are not alone in the world:   Here's a recent article from the telegraph:   http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scie

Weirdest Dream Ever (or- I'm reading too damn much sci-fi)

Setting: frontier planet Evergreen. It's a Gaia world with rich volcanic soil, long growing seasons, lush jungles with many strange and dangerous animals up to and including dinosaurs.   The law enforcement on Evergreen are called Colonial Rangers. Many have territories many hundreds of kilometers across.   Scores of colonists start to go missing near the vast swamps at the mouth of the long, slow Toulon River that crosses much of the continent. This is of special concern because the city of

From my blog - Author Jamie Lynn Miller

I interview a lot of MM Authors on my website. I'm going to try to post those interviews here in case readers on GA would like to learn about new authors that write MM fiction.   Today Jamie Lynn Miller stops by to talk a bit fan fiction, why she writes eBooks and, oh yeah, her her new book, Memory's Prisoner.     Thank you so much for hosting me here today, Andrew, I really appreciate it.   Today I'd like to talk about why I got into writing ebooks, back in 2008. Unlike some opini

Grief and the Messed Up Things It Does to People, Part 2

As an update, Ethan called me tonight. We talked for two hours- he might have been a little drunk, but not anywhere near the way he was the last time we talked.   Mainly, it was remembering our friend Steve. All these random little memories that we kept babbling about, because I think we both feel like we don't want to forget them. We don't want to forget his personality. His voice. His mannerisms. The way he wore this brown Sean John jacket and smelled of Black and Mild cigars. So many memori

A Dramatic Monologue

I haven't written a monologue in a really long time (we're talking undergrad, but I thought I'd give it a shot.)   JUSTIN, late 20's, talks about the death of his good friend from college to a grief support group.   So, hi. My name is Justin. I'm here to talk about my friend, Randy. Randy died of a drug overdose three months ago, today. He was 27 and just a couple of weeks short in getting his master's degree in drug counseling. The irony, right?   It's strange. When he first died,

Let the Music Play

I don't believe I've done this before but, Let the Music Play by C James is a book written on the talent level of Tom Clancy, back when he wrote his books.   I highly recommend this book to any who loves a good thriller with gay characters and written in a non-porn way.   Let The Music Play

What were they thinking!

The Arizona state legislature recently passed a bill purportedly to help protect the religious beliefs of business owners. The following column is based on my understanding of that event, and if I've misunderstood or misinterpreted anything about the situation, I welcome any corrective responses, as well as general responses.   The way I understand it the bill is intended to protect, at least in part, businesses who wish to not do business with parties whose views or practices might conflict

New story Concepts and observation about seperate but equal

First, a new concept in my story is the ambiguous morality of need in human existence. One groups needs in order to exist may conflict with anothers group's needs. In modern fiction, we often read about good over evil, when it comes to needs. However, Eastern storytelling usually make the case that needs are essentially ambiguous where good and evil come from perspective.   Remember that as you read my chapter.   Now here is my thoughts to continue on kansas, since Arizona is starting the sa

The Bode Miller Custody Battle And What It Means for Women

I've been reading about this case, and all the strangle twists and turns it's taken, and I'm really fascinated by it. The basic gist is that Bode Miller, in 2012, had a few dates with a woman named Sarah McKenna that he met on a matchmaking service. He got her pregnant. She contends that he initially wanted nothing to do with her or the baby. In the meantime, Bode Miller met and married volleyball player Morgan Beck, in a span of a few months. At seven months, Sarah McKenna left California for N

Hey, can you lend a hand? Do you like to read?

I've been with GA for a few years now. When I first joined I would have killed to have immediately found a good beta and editor. Over time, for most things I found myself settling down and working with the same two or three incredible people over and over again. It was comfortable, and I knew I could rely on their honest opinions of my work.   Flash forward to recently. While there are some damn fine editors working on site the Betas seem to have vanished.   What is a Beta? Glad you asked.

The Dream

I heard a terrible noise. I didn't know what it was. In the distance a farm tractor moved slowly across a field, a man walking alongside.  Everything was so vivid, the sky a brilliant blue - too blue - and the hedgerows and trees impossibly green.   Looking back at the tractor I could see it had changed direction, lurching across the field towards a gap in the boundary hedge, the walking man now clinging to the tractor as if for his life.  Strange; both he and the driver seemed to

Why one should storyboard a longer story

The graphic on the page linked below is unfair to Ayn Rand, but she wouldn't care. Authoring was only one of many tools to advance her ideas. Still, the concept applies to most stories. If you don't plan your story before writing, it had better be short, or you will likely find yourself veering into the weeds, trying to keep the story alive.   http://macroexposure.com/2014/02/18/atlas-shrugged-in-one-chart/   Edited to remove the image of the chart. Health Care Is an Awesome Thing!

This is kind of an old video but since I can't sleep, I'm browsing content on Upworthy just for shits and giggles, and I stumbled across it and rewatched it. John Green is a really intelligent guy who knows a whole lot, and it occurred to me while watching this video that if I lived in the US, odds are I would be unable to pay for my antidepressants, and that would seriously suck. For 98 10mg tablets, of which I take two a day, I pay 74NOK, which is $12 US. That is roughly $7 per month. I don't
